I was driving thought town last weekend taking the family to NC to visit fam. Last year about this time I passed through town, and listened to the dial. I've always been a fan of Top 40 so, I tend to pay particular attention to top 40 stations. Last year, Kicks 106.9 was "106.9 and 100.9 Kicks FM", and the station sounded dull, and the music was awful. Magic 98.5 was much more dominate. This year, 106.9 has repositioned it's self to "Kicks 106.9" dropping the "and 100.9". The voice guy has changed, and the music was smoking! What happened?

About 12 years ago, I was able to tune Kicks 106.9 in all the time in my car around the corner of Bell Rd and Murfreesboro Road. Now I can get them only once in a while. I always was able to tune them in on I-40 East as soon as I passed the airport area on my way to Knoxville. I thought for sure they would remain Hot AC, but looks like they're better off competing with Magic 98.5. I can get Magic in most of the time, especially in the morning but Kicks barely comes in, maybe because of WNFN being at 106.7 .

WNFN (and their HD) probably doesn't help, but Kicks is licensed to Monterey and their transmitter is about 13 miles east of Magic's.

There is a great pocket for Kicks in Nashville from Franklin Rd at Hogan Rd to Old Hickory Blvd and in a few spots near I-65S where it's
clear as a whistle most of the time. I helped out when they originally went on the air in the early 80's (83, etc???) as Jet 107
(at 107.1) and Top 40. It was a great station, good team, all the right moves were made and WHUB-FM (now Magic 98.5)
was the worst station on the planet as softer than soft AC running off reel to reel. Things changed when CC came in and
grabbed The Giant and 98.5. I am glad to hear they're sounding good. Their tower is/was visible right on I-40 near Monterey. That area
is higher than the land near Cookeville, so the signal carries better than most, even though they are either 25kw or now 50kw.
I think that's all pretty close to right. I could be way off base.

Speaking of that, anybody know where are the tower(s) for Magic and the Giant in Cookevegas? Been so long since those days,
I have forgotten. And is Austin Stinnett still the CC Engineer? When I tune in for a minute or two a week, seems like
I catch the commercials!!! Not a bad thing, I guess. I know Terry from Kicks used to post on these boards??? Ya still around,
my friend? Hope all is well.

23kw, but their antenna is higher than the nominal 150m (500') limit for Class C2, so in theory their coverage should be identical to what Magic gets from their 50kw/150m. Excepting, of course, for the fact that Magic's equal-diameter coverage circle is centered 13 miles west of Kicks'.

Kicks:
http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/map...IES,&off=streets,GRID,shorelin&ht=0.5&wid=0.5
which seems to map just north of I-40 and just south of the center of Monterey.

Magic:
http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/map...IES,&off=streets,GRID,shorelin&ht=0.5&wid=0.5
within the triangle formed by 70N, I-40, and Tenn. 111 just southeast of Cookeville. This tower is also visible from I-40, just to the north of the highway.

Giant:
http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/map...IES,&off=streets,GRID,shorelin&ht=0.5&wid=0.5
roughly midway between Cookeville & Monterey, north of I-40. Same tower as TV-22.
