KICKS morning show with Craig Cornett

You can say what you will about Moby...but there was a guy who actually did entertaining bits on the air. He may have been a windbag, and completely enamored of himself, but the guy was entertaining. The combination of Moby, Deborah Richards and Jim Vann won an ACM award...never forget that. Nobody else at KICKS/EAGLE has done that...likely none ever will.

Bandy and Bailey were a disaster from the beginning. Very unimaginative, monotone delivery, and no interesting content. Made Sansone look bad. Then you have a sidechick that does non-news and non-entertainment bits, and laughs uproariously at her own lines....all while slobbering on the male country singers that come in the studio.

Now we have Craig Cornett. Seems like the salt of the earth. But reading the newspaper on the air and taking phone calls about the topic du jour between records does not constitute a winning program. That requires NO show prep. A guy could show up five minutes before air and do that kind of show.

How hard is it to be an entertainer on the morning show? Nobody's looking for a standup comedian, or seltzer down your pants, but is it too much to ask to hear someone be clever and funny with good comedic timing?

Oh...I forgot. Jim Vann is still doing all that on the air. However, Jim is getting less and less airtime to interact with the host, and all of that cleverness is being lost.

Good luck Craig. If what you've shown us sofar is a harbinger of the best you've got, you won't be here long, either. By the way, for heaven's sake, learn how to work the phone buttons. This ain't rocket science.

Well frankly moby started off ok. It seemed he spiraled into a cliche. Finishing off his career with a focus on a female audience. The yeah babys and peaches turned into a every third word torture. It almost became baby talk. Moby turned me off to country as a whole. I switch between podcasts and 96 rock now. I'm hoping they return to southern rock one day.

Now to me it should be called, 96 rock done with the old top 40 clock, playing classic worn out rock songs.<P ID="signature">______________

Nothing against Moby but, to me, he was just so-so. He was fortunate
that he happened to come to Kicks at the right time, just as the Country format was taking off. As for Deborah and Jim Vann, I agree they added a lot to the show.

Agreed. But to Victor's credit, he eventually realized they were a mistake and he's rectified the situation. In spite of his early shortcomings, Cornett is already an improvement over J&B.

Agreed. She simply doesn't fit. I think her "me" attitude scares away more listeners than it could ever attract. And the fact that she doesn't seem to have any news credibility at all really puzzles me. Why do you think WSB does so well, in morning drive? Because people want to know what's going on in the world around them. Qualitative studies show that the Country format appeals to a more upscale demo than it used to. Nobody expects a music station to do five-minute news breaks every half hour, but educated listeners expect much more in terms of information than either Kicks or Eagle has been giving them. Victor knows that as well as anyone does, so I'm really not sure why he hasn't done something to address the problem.

Disagree. Cornett is obviously not the funniest guy on morning radio but I don't think he has to be, with this format. I think he's a safe bet to settle in and be just the kind of solid morning guy Kicks needs. But, he needs more help around him. Which brings us to...

> Oh...I forgot. Jim Vann is still doing all that on the air.

Agreed. Jim Vann has one of the quickest wits in the market and his talent is being wasted. I'd really like to see his role in the show expanded. Besides being funny, he seems to be a smart guy who "gets it." I think with a little time and encouragement, he could be a very effective sidekick type to Cornett. And don't forget, they're apparently looking for a producer. A new addition to the show could improve things even more, or not, depending upon what type of person they get and what type of role they give him/her on the show.

All in all, I agree that Cornett has gotten off to a slow start. But I think he's already an improvement over what they had before. Kicks management seems to know what they're doing and I think they're gonna be in good shape.
