Kicks on the Bull

ok, so since around Thanksgiving the Bull has been heavily advertising that they play "The Most Country" than any other radio station in Atlanta (and now that they've dropped the Braves, I guess that will stand). They even back it up by telling us how many more songs they play in any given day or week than, and this is where they usually just say "that other station up the dial" or something like that. Today I heard them actually say the name "Kicks 1015" when touting how much more music they played yesterday. I guess what do you have to lose, everyone knows they exist, but it was still unusual to hear the name of a competitor on the air like that. Is this becoming more common, or is it a case of desperate times call for desperate measures?

The only times I have ever heard a radio station mention a specific competitor:

1) B98.5's TV spots making fun of "sleepy elevator music" showing someone snoozing to a radio with peaches coming out of the speaker.

2) 96 Rock's slogan "Rock & Roll from A to Y, because nothing good starts with Z" (obvious slam on Z93). I think that this goes all the way back to the Jacor--or maybe even the Citicasters--days.

3) Buzz's "99SUX" stickers.

I think the philosophy has been the top-rated station doesn't mention the stations that it's beating. But losing stations sometimes mention the #1 station. As you say, what do they have to lose?

The Bull can do whatever they want but will NEVER beat Kicks 101.5, Kicks is the dominate Ctry. station with a terrific signal and live local talent and not voice tracked. CC needs to get some smarts and make 94.9 all talk and dump am-640. 640 would do much better if it had a standards format, MOYL that nobody else is doing and most likely get better numbers.

You MOYL format wishers are hysterical. Which fantasy planet are you living on? MOYL wouldn't pull a third of the current GST number.

This just in, MOYL draws one listener. The listener was recenlty voted number one listener to listen at work.

NEVER is a strong word. if Kicks believes they're unbeatable...they're vulnerable.
I have no clue as to the mindset at either station, but NEVER is a broad brush.
Of course, this is also coming from MOYL's #1 fan. Selling 64+ ? good luck.

A few years ago...Q100 (back when they were at 100.5) had a few billboards that directly mentioned Star 94 ("Star 94" was printed on the billboard...about how Q100 had a better variety of music.

Fast forward a few years...Q100 moves to a 100kW signal at 99.7, and is beating Star 94 in the ratings. Apparently, these things can work...if you give it a few years and a get on a better signal.

Kicks is 100kW, and the Bull is 99kW. If the Bull were to get onto a 100kW signal...

Back when Bob & Tom were on 96 Rock (my, how times have changed), Jimmy and/or Toucher were bashing them one morning and actually telling people to go over and listen to them for a couple minutes JUST to see how bad they really are/were.

I saw on Mediabase that at one time they apparently ran some liners mentioning Star as well. Stuff like "give your old hits to Star 94". Clever.

Kinda like when Stewie dared viewers to switch to the competition during a "Family Guy" episode:

"Old people are gross, no matter how cute they try to make them look on Desperate Housewives. Go ahead, switch over to ABC for five seconds. I'll wait. I'll wait 5 seconds.

(pause)

Oh my god, did you see?"

You've GOT to be KIDDING! I'm 60 miles north of Atlanta, and there is ABSOLUTELY no difference between the Kicks signal, and the Bull signal. Where do you get that the Bull is on a weak signal?? I get that you don't like the Bull, but come on.

In 1989, when 104.7 was WALR/Music Radio, they had a promo that said, “We don’t use a pre-fab format like Quixie or Power.”
