Look at the numbers around this time next year and you'll get an accurate view of who is winning mornings.
Did David Lee Trainwreck make it a year? How about O & A lite? If the trend happens to be that they lose listeners month to month CBS may not give them a year.
I agree with Klein, KC and company should concentrate more on developing their show, trying to make it unique, getting some sort of buzz going, and when/if they get momentum, then start attacking the competition.
Does Kidd Chris have the burden of Free FM on his back? Is he piped in from another city as the previous two were? Does he not have an established audience from afternoons? If some sort of talk program is gonna work in Philly, the audience has pretty much established two options. Either:
A. Its Howard Stern
OR
B. Its local.
I believe Chris did very well during his run in afternoons. He spat out numbers today on his show (which can be streamed here
http://www.kiddshow.yournextgraphicdesigner.com/) claiming that in two key demos he ticked up, taking mornings from 4th out of the 4 rock stations to 2nd. I don't remember specific demo numbers, but they're on the podcast (the guy running the site usually posts play-by-play of what goes on when, it may be up in a few days, check back if you don't feel like listening or flipping through).
Giving Chris MONTHS to turn mornings around would be completely moronic (though this IS the business of radio, so nothing would surprise me). P&S have been established for what, 10 years now? They've built a compound and Chris has only begun to pick ax the wall. This will not be an overnight thing.
Also, there is bad blood between Klein and Chris already (Chris has forever been referring to Klein as "Michael Clown", and today he attacked his food column, as well as forwarded a "punishment line" cell phone number to Klein's Inquirer number and had Inquirer management request him to end it after shutting down phone lines at the Inquirer). Chris attacking P&S has NOTHING to do with those numbers, as he only recently started with the attacks in the last few weeks. He continuously made a point that they needed to "rebuild the station" first before taking things further.
As for his content, I'd say he is an extreme alternative, even polar opposite of a P&S show. P&S has been the only game in the market for almost three years. Those who would rather listen to the anger and edge of a show like Chris's had no choice. P&S win by default. And what better way of generating buzz and interest than infiltrating the exact show where the most potential listeners are and dropping bombs? Perhaps a few billboards, though I imagine CBS radio is still feeling the sting of DLR's aural awful greeting highway motorists.
"A resume of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. No wonder we hired him."
Oh, there was wonder...
