Kidsongs TV Show

I just wonder if anyone actually remembers the original Kidsongs TV Show. I'm not talking about the version that was on PBS in the 1990s, but I recently learned that there was an earlier version of it that aired in the late 80s in Saturday morning syndication. I don't ever recall that one being on in my area. Does anyone on here remember it, or if it aired where you lived?

My first exposure to Kidsongs was when I bought VHS and cassette copies for my kids when they were little. I'm thinking either very late 80s or early 90s, and they were repackaged for PBS in the mid 90s (wrapped around a storyline about the kids breaking into an abandoned TV station, firing up and producing cute music videos. There are several of them on YouTube. I don't remember seeing them on Saturday morning TV but of course I've sleptg since then.

Yes, they were originally in first-run syndication around 1987-88 or so. Seems like most of their affiliates aired Kidsongs BEFORE the Sat AM network cartoons - KOIN Portland and WTMJ Milwaukee both cleared them at 6:30AM, and that's probably why they were short-lived at first. (It had MUCH better success on home video.) BTW it wasn't cleared by any Yakima station. The intro to the first-run version can be seen in this KTVI St. Louis sign-on montage, which also cleared them:

I'm going to bet that Kidssongs qualified for E/I status and that's why they were on very early in the morning.

Charlie Van Dyke voicing the sign-on right before Sermonette.

If we're talking about 1987, I don't think E/I hadn't been created yet by Congress. IIRC that didn't come in until sometime during the Clinton administration.

I remember the Kidsongs VHS tapes, we had some in my house. I don't know what year my parents would have purchased them.

WTAF/WTXF-TV 29 in Philadelphia aired the 1987 series according to several newspaper listings. I remember the VHS tapes and the later 1994 series more so than the 1987 series. I was born in the summer of 1988 when the 1987 series had already ended or was close to ending.

The Children's Television Act was put into law during the Bush administration, in 1990. The first casualty was NBC taking out their cartoons for T-NBC, and the rest was history. Now Litton rules EVERY Saturday morning block besides Fox with their nature and animal shows...Fox of course airs Weekend Marketplace infomercials and many of their affiliates clear the Xploration E/I block including the Fox O&Os.
