KIEV 870 Question 1976-1985

Hey Guys:

I was hoping someone could help me clear this up.

In the Broadcasting Yearbooks from 1976 to 1985 KIEV's format is listed as "Talk, Beautiful Music".

Is this right or was it just talk?

Thanks

T.J.

There was a story about KIEV in the June 13, 1976 edition of the Los Angeles Times, it mentioned the schedule as being:

Religion from sign on to 10:30 am
Easy Listening to Noon
Talk from Noon to sign off

It was a daytimer as well, at least until the late 1980's. ("We have to shut down at this time to avoid interfering with stations as far away as Louisiana," the sign-off message said....)

During the winter nights here in south Orange County I can still pick up that New Orleans station WWL

interfering with KRLA 870.

The old KIEV started their night schedule sometime around 1984 IIRC. They had at night many many many "get rich Quick" and "real estate for no money down" infomercial shows during 1985 through 1987.

Wasn't most of their programming brokered dollar a holler fare? They sold blocks of time, even to George Putnam, and they got their time on air. I think that even now as KRLA under Salem a lot of their fare is paid for by the presenters especially the weekend stuff.

It wasn't a dollar a hollar. The rates per hour were very steep. Can't remember ever hearing beautiful music on KIEV. It switched from country to oldies (with current hits played too) in the early 70's then started slowly to drift into all talk with a combo of paid programs and hosts who were paid.
