The Winter ratings were released today for San Diego, and Smooth Jazz KIFM is #1!

Why don't other SJ stations follow KIFM's blueprint for success?

Maybe San Diego just has better listeners? ;D

The market lifestyle is ideal for the format but Mike V and his staff have done an excellent job in making a forward moving contemporary radio station that just happens to be instrumental based. The music is not cookie cutter. They have real people on the air that the listeners relate to. They are connected to the community. They spend money on marketing and promotions. Gee, what a concept! I've said it before and I'll say it again, that it amazes me that this station is not looked at more often by other ownership as the role model on what this format can do rather than the usual suspects who can't see their hand in front of their face if it didn't show up on their research. Congratulations to Mike, Kelly Cole and the rest of the KIFM staff on a job well done. They been doing this for sometime now and my wish is that they continue on this path for many years to come.

I think the problem with radio is the fact that it's such a copy cat business. It's no secret to anyone that the Smooth Jazz stations have been dropping left and right. Nice to see people making it work and I hope it continues. I always wanted to work in the format.

KIFM is just awesome. It does make you like and respect the format more just listening to them. Makes you want to work in it too but fat chance. KIFM and maybe one or two others will be the only terrestrial options soon. Unless the KIFM versiion clicks and interests other operators. With BA out there that might be tough.

They play some fabulous instrumentals. I'd have to hit the button when the vocals came on because, like everyone else, they play tired old tired old but after 15 years of BA being the role model you simply have to dig deep to find real NAC vocals and it would go totally against the ingrained thought patterns of Industry culture at this time. But there are some good ones out there! (check out Canadian SJ 2009 vocalist of the year Daniela Nardi's "485"..i'm just sayin ;)
