KIFM is toast!

According to Radio Insight...

Lincoln Financial Media Smooth AC 98.1 KIFM San Diego shifted to Soft AC “Easy 98.1” at 10am this morning (8/19).

The station’s airstaff stays in place with Greg Cook in mornings, PD Mike Vasquez in middays, Dawne Davis in afternoons, and Maria Lopez at night. KIFM registered a 3.5 share in the July PPM’s trailing CBS AC 96.5 KYXY’s 4.0.

The station’s first hour consisted of:
Commodores – Easy
Eagles – New Kid In Town
Whitney Houston – I Will Always Love You
Ambrosia – Biggest Part Of Me
Stephen Bishop – On And On
Elton John – Little Jeannie
Four Tops – Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I Got)
Phil Collins – Against All Odds
Wilson Phillips – Release Me
Bee Gees – Too Much Heaven
Spinners – Working My Way Back To You
Air Supply – The One That You Love
Captain & Tennille – Do That To Me One More Time
Norah Jones – Don’t Know Why

This use to be a really good smooth jazz station before they went smooth AC. It's funny the smooth jazz format out lived the smooth ac one and I'm sure this new "easy" AC format will flop too in a year. It is really sad the way things have gone with radio these days.

KIFM had already evolved to what was essentially a Soft AC with a little more of a rhythmic/soft urban component, so I look at this as more of a tweak than an all-out change. They were just a Soft AC that happened to still play the Jets, Bob Marley, Sade and Toni Braxton instead of Lady Gaga or Demi Lovato. As far as Smooth Jazz or even Smooth AC went, KIFM was "toast" long ago. And yet they kept reporting as a Smooth Jazz outlet, which, with the size of the SJ reporting panel these days enabled Maroon 5 and Ellie Goulding to have "smooth jazz" chart showings.

KIFM was great in the 2000's, but now is another AC station. How is it going to compete with KYXY 96.5? I still enjoy KOAZ 103.7 in Albuquerque, which is a great Smooth Jazz station.
