KIIS 1150 1985 TO 1997

Hey Guys:

I have a question about 1150 from 1985 to 1997. I saw on another past post that KIIS 1150 in 1988 had a brief rap format. True?

Did 1150 simulcate from 1985 to 1997?

Thanks

T.J.

Yes, it simulcasted. You'll find plenty of airchecks with the famous "KIIS-FM and AM Los Angeles" legal ID, and 1150 was the AM. Early, early on they did have different programming, but by '85 I'm pretty sure it was a simulcast. It definitely was in the 90s.

It did not have a separate rap format, however. Whatever songs people may have heard was both on the FM and AM.

Always loved the simulcast ID:

"102.7 Kiss-FM is K-I-I-S AM....and FM, Los Angeles."

At 6pm on 12/28/84, Big Band 1150 KPRZ returned to the KIIS-AM call letters with a Top 40 format. Larry Morgan kicked it off with “Easy Lover” by Philip Bailey and Phil Collins. The AM would only simulcast the FM during morning and afternoon drive times. The other dayparts were "shadowcast" with different DJs on the AM and FM, but using the same music logs. So, while you heard Morgan playing Easy Lover on 1150 AM, Bruce Vidal could be heard at the same time, playing the same song, on 102.7 KIIS-FM. By the 90’s, KIIS-AM was a 100% simulcast until the flip to Sports Talk.

I'm no authority on the subject, but I've got tapes with a format on 1150 that wasn't the simulcast. Early 90s maybe. Mix shows, and lots of early rap. It actually sounds like KDAY to be honest, until you hear 1150 AM IDs every hour. If I can find the tapes, I'll prove it.. but I know for sure there was a time when it wasn't simulcast. I had an old school boombox with an analog tuner. I would flip back and forth from AM/FM.. no tuning of the dial required.

The New Stereo KISS AM 1150, LA's Hot Mix!

Yes I got some tapes, too. From about 1987 Milli Vanilli, Neneh Cherry-Buffalo Stance, Tone Loc station ID's, Rob Base, Stevie B, NWA, Ice T-Colors, Egyptian Lover-Girls, Inner City-Good Life, Dana Dane, Trinere-I know you love me. All New And Jammin'...The New Stereo KISS AM 1150, another 30 minute H-H-Hot Mix...

Maybe I'm young and naive, but there was a reason to 'shadowcast' at one time? It seems like these days it would cost too much money to support two people playing the same music in the same market... I think everyone who follows the boards and the industry knows why I say that. Was the purpose to have two personalities so a listener could choose which one they liked more?

1150 kiis am only lasted from 1987-1989 it was l.a hottest mixes i was living in los angeles listening to kiis am back in the days i got idea kiis fm should broadcast l.a hottest mixes on h.d 2 that would be nice to hear all over again in the early 90's i had alot of kiis am hot mixes i got rid of them somebody was saying they have hot mixes on tape is there anyway you can convert them tapes into mp3's. also kiis am l.a hottest mixes went off the air about 12 midnight in 1989 they simulcast kiis fm on am.

Maybe KIIS-AM did that to compete with Power 106's "LA's fresh new music mix" format when Power was at it's peak in ratings

The simulcasting AM/FM sister stations stations was limited to 25% of a broadcast day in cities above a certain population threshold (which was relatively small). The rule was lifted by 1986.

There were some stations....mainly Classical music stations Ie. KKHI AM/FM and KDFC/KIBE in the Bay Area that were able to get waivers to the rule.
