KIIS FM 102.7

I know this is a Houston forum, but how big is this KIIS Fm? I’m asking because yesterday on my job they gave us a new Nissan Vehicle which comes with SIRIUS XM I’m assuming as a trial.
And it has KIIS FM on one of the satellite channels.

I think it’s the only FM radio station on Sirius.

Amd today I was messing with Apple Music and I noticed it has an option for local radio. And KIIS was on that list.

And well why would it be on that list if I’m not anywhere close to CALIFORNIA?

I'm in New York City, and I'm also seeing a number of out-of-town radio stations that are listed under Local Broadcasters on the Apple Music app, including several stations whose call signs begin with the letter K. I'm also wondering what's going on there.

It's iHeartRadio's flagship CHR station. I don't know exactly how many people really listen to KIIS on SiriusXM outside of Los Angeles. But iHeartRadio itself has used KIIS as a promotions brand for music festival's that enter the Los Angeles Area. I knew in the rest of the USA the Jingle Ball is known as the Iheart Jingle Ball at Christmas. However when it enters Los Angeles it's renamed as KIIS Jingle Ball. I know KIIS is the top revenue station in some years and WTOP all news is the top revenue station in other years on average. If I am not mistaken Iheart also franchise the KIIS brand to other HotAC and CHR stations they own around the USA. Just not sure how this plays out for KIIS to be the second largest station in revenue though but they are factors.

There is even KIIS Australia. Yes Australia even uses the Los Angeles branding of KIIS at 106.5 FM and it's on iHeartRadio too.

When XM Satellite began, there were many channels provided by over the air radio stations, including Clear Channel and HBC. Most ended when all music channels went to having no commercials. KIIS remained, as there as the big name of Seacrest and the KIIS events.

After that, it just hung around as a bigger-than-life CHR station.

And you are right. WHTZ Z100 NYC is also on SiriusXM but only online. Plus, there used to be **WAY** more local stations there from Clear Channel (at the time), including WSIX and WGCI. When the contract expired, all of them went away **EXCEPT** WHTZ and KIIS. KIIS now remains on general lineups with WHTZ being online only.

The latter is now so redundant since you can stream WHTZ live for yourself on the iHeartRadio app, online, or on an Internet Radio device.

Consider this one Ex-Californians. Yes Texas has been on the receiving end of getting Ex-California Residents, along with Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Tennessee. Not sure how KIIS or Iheart is playing up to that one too.

My guess would be that Apple considers “local broadcasters” to be any broadcasters who have a transmitter and an antenna, not broadcasters in your specific area. I get a list of stations from a variety of places, though all would seem to be US stations.

I usually use TuneIn as my local radio tuner since most everybody in my area is available on it. The only properties in my area that don’t appear on TuneIn don't stream at all as Audacy and Townsquare don't own any stations where I live. I do, however, find Apple Music to be useful in the car when I'm not using satellite or regular broadcast radio. Shouting at Siri to change the station is easier and safer than fiddling with apps.

I think the main reason for making KIIS from LA available is the lineup including Seacrest. He's a national figure, and where not available locally, KISS is a good alternative.

When Sirius downgrades the audio on KIIS like they have some of their other channels then folks can always use their smartphone iHeart app and have better quality again.

IIRC, Clear Channel supplied badly needed cash that enabled XM to launch back in 2001, and got a chunk of bandwidth to use as it wished as a sort of quid pro quo. IHeart no longer has a stake in the merged SiriusXM, but KIIS remains, for reasons still unexplained.

KHMX Houston, WHTZ New York City, WLTW New York City, WSIX Nashville and WGCI Chicago have also been on XM at some point as well.

Correct. This goes back to a 1999 investment by Clear Channel in XM. As part of that investment, CC received channel space for a number of their most popular stations. I think the original number of stations was 10. This dropped after the Sirius-XM merger. KIIS may be the last one.
