KIIS FM 1979

ChannelFlipper: That's right. In fact, after KPRZ went under, the KIIS-AM-FM thing was a "shadowcast"---with KIIS-AM playing the same music, in the same order, as KIIS-FM, just with a different jock and a few minutes behind KIIS-FM. When the simulcast rules were revised, actual simulcasting began, leading to my all-time favorite legal ID:

"102-point-seven KISS-FM is K-I-I-S AM and FM, Los Angeles."

("KISS-FM is K-I-I-S AM?")

That is right, although I remember it as listing the FM first, but regardless, it has always been one of the coolest sounding TOH IDs which is why I remember it so well. When you are simulcasting your FM station on AM that only serves to increase its reach, you are a boss (to use the old term) station. It would not be as big of a deal now with so many choices available, but back then - boss!

They led with the AM in 1989---by 1990, they'd flipped it to "FM and AM".

According to the Vox Jox column by Rollye Bornstein which appeared in the Nov. 24, 1984 issue of Billboard, and after reporting in the previous week's issue that KPRZ would indeed become KIIS-AM, GM Wally Clark promoted MD Mike Schaefer to the post of AM PD and FM assistant PD, while Gene Sandbloom becomes MD for both top 40 outlets, which will simulcast not only Rick Dees' morning offering but also Big Ron O'Brien's afternoon slot as well, since O'Brien decided to hang around---turning down a lucrative CHUM Toronto offer and signing a multi-year pact with the Gannett outlet.

Thanks to all of you for sharing your wisdom.
