KIIS FM Adds Train "Hey, So Sister"

Is it just me, or does anyone else think "Hey Soul Sister" and "Need You Now" don't quite belong in the CHR format? To me they seem more AC or Hot AC.

that's the great thing about a really good chr is that they can play songs like those and make them sound like they belong! I'm the case of KIIS Kwpr is not gonna play any of those songs and but the looks of it either is KAMP so why not strike while
the iron is hot.

They do belong. CHR is more than just Justin Bieber and Ke$ha. It's supposed to be a diverse format.

In the long run, "Hey, Soul Sister" and "Need You Now" will be Hot AC and AC staples. But "Hey, Soul Sister" was recently the most downloaded song in the country. I remember "Need You Know" was at least top 5 most downloaded not long before that. Isn't that what CHR should be all about? Playing what's POPULAR? The formula has worked for years....just play the hits.

I agree. It helps to add some balance to CHR playlists that are already heavy on the Rhythmic but not so on more Rock songs.

I think it's crazy that a song like Rob Thomas' "Someday" can be a #1 Hot AC track, but not even scratch the top 30 on CHR.

(And I know that I'm not in the target demographic for CHR/Pop, so my opinion doesn't really matter, but just throwing it out.)

This is all very interesting to me. I'm still kinda learning all the proper lingo for the different formats, so I just have to remember that CHR = Pop = Top 40. Over the years, a lot of songs have been on both the Pop and AC charts. I never really noticed that Rob Thomas' "Someday" was missing from airplay on CHR stations. Good to know!

Unless you're listening to a Cumulus CHR. In that case, it's practically every hour, on the hour.

No I think they sound great on the format and add balance. The only danger is if CHR would add too many adult leaning songs and go through a "doldrums" cycle. That isn't a problem right now. There is near perfect balance and variety in CHR today, as good as it's ever been.

the hot AC station in my market (Seattle) was playing Hey Soul Sister back in January, and now its crossing into CHR. Seems pretty rare that records break in Hot AC and then cross into CHR...usually the other way around.

I actually didn't think the song was a CHR fit until I heard a high school student singing it at Jamba Juice. That convinced me!

I first heard "Hey Soul Sister" in a retail store last year when it was first released. It wasn't big on Hot AC yet much less CHR. The store was playing a satellite music service. Normally I get "oh wow" reactions when retail plays a song I haven't heard in ages. This was one of the rare times I got that reaction in a store from a new song I had never heard before. I couldn't get it out of my mind. I saw a teenage African-American girl singing along to it that day and I got a feeling this would not just be a Hot AC mid-charter but a huge mass appeal hit.
