A similar mindset and comparable time frame form the basis for Classic Hits programming. The reason why most stations in the format have a relatively small library of the core power/secondary/accent categories is that relatively few listeners are tuned in all day (or even for a few hours continuously); while no one expects to hear all of their favorite songs, they expect that the songs they do hear are a subset of those preferences.
This is why you often hear the phrase "consensus favorites" used by CH programmers to describe the on-air libraries. There is, of course, room for the occasional lunar title (such as my hourly "Forgotten 45" feature) but you still have to do enough research to ensure you don't drive people away with those titles because they are less "familiar" or well-remembered.
KIIS-FM has always understood how to do CHR. The only difference between the formats is the age of the music ... listener tastes come into play anyway.
