What is up with KIIS FM sound processing. It sounds horrible. Has anyone else notice this today?

Yes, I have noticed that too.

You know that popping sound in your ears that you get when you're in a vehicle that travels down out of the mountains? That's what KIIS's proccessing sounds like! For a minute I swore I was either on I-5 through the grapevine or I-70 coming into Denver.

They changed processing recently to a different brand of equipment because someone in authority likes that brand. The sound is suffering.

The problem is digital HD radio. With the 8-second delay that it has they are having problems with the processing and not only at KIIS.

Now if someone could only explain to me why the digital HD radio equipment creates this 8 second delay to recreate the actual sound and why it can't be made live. I can't wait until we have an earthquake and everything will be 8 seconds late on the air...

Why 8 seconds?

The 8-second delay is required because of the HD Radio "blend" requirement. In a nutshell:

- The HD radio component is digital (duh). The audio has to be reconstructed by the receiver from a digital stream and it takes a certain number of samples to reconstruct a decent amount of audio.

- The analog component is, of course, analog (duh again) and requires no such reconstruction.

- Both analog and digital components are transmitted using the same carrier, so when you tune in, the analog audio is available immediately while the digital audio is buffering in your receiver.

- Because of this, the analog audio has to be delayed 8 seconds before transmission so that it can be sychronized with the digital audio - otherwise there's an audible and highly annoying "jump" of audio when the HD Radio receiver switches from the analog to the digital audio.

Having said all that, I stand by my original statement. KIIS' problem is NOT the fact that they're broadcasting with HD Radio. This makes absolutely no difference to the analog program you're hearing. The problem is that a person who has the authority to do so changed audio processor brands at KIIS, after many years of using another brand of processor that had been extensively "dialed in" by KIIS' chief engineer. THAT's where the problem is - not the HD Radio broadcast.

They're not using Omnia 6 anymore?

Re: Why 8 seconds?

Yeah, there's a reason it sounds mushy and over-compressed now.

Email me offline and I'll give you the story.

I visited family in LA a few weeks ago and noticed this as well. It sounded absolutely AWFUL. ANd KIIS always had good processing. I didn't know if they were trying to make it sound more "rap" like...as if the music was playing out of a low budget boombox or something. I couldn't even listen to it.
