KIIS HD2 Down

What was the format on it?

Check back tomorrow, it should be back up, if not you can email them so they're aware of the issue.

Chances are they're on a backup transmitter. Most stations don't HD-encode their backups.

And with all the tower congestion on Mt Wilson, we may have some kind of post-repack issue... such as removal of an old antenna after new ones were fully in operation... which sent KIIS to the Mulholland Drive AUX site for a day or two.

I would hope a major station in a major market owned by one of the largest radio station owners would not need to be told one of their broadcasts were down, even an HD channel.

Keep in mind that in quite a few markets, the additional iHeart HD channels that are not either leased to others or part of a national initiative such as the LGBTQ channel have been turned off and the bandwidth given entirely to the HD simulcast of the analog main signal.

Do we think iHeart has decided to abandon "Evolution," an EDM channel, since some of it is duplicated on "Pride Radio"? Of course, Pride Radio is more vocal and plays dance music from the 1980s till today. Evolution had few vocals and no DJs. Pride Radio has voice-tracked DJs who offer some comments directed to the LGBTQ community, but no talk shows as heard on "Channel Q" on Entercom stations.

So maybe iHeart decided it didn't need two mainly dance music subchannels? I see no NYC iHeart stations carry Evolution.

OK, I looked up the Wikipedia pages for the iHeart FM stations in LA and NYC. Here's what you can hear on each of their HD signals...

Los Angeles

KIIS - HD2: Evolution, might be discontinued.

KBIG - HD2: Pride Radio

KOST - HD2: KFI Talk
- HD3: The Breeze (Soft AC)

KRRL - HD2: Slow Jamz (Soft Urban AC)
- HD3: Air 1 (Wikipedia may not be up to date on this, since EMF now has 100.3 KKLQ)

KYSR - HD2: KLAC Sports

----

New York City

WAXQ - HD2: WOR Talk

WHTZ - no HD subchannels

WKTU - HD2: Pride Radio
- HD3: The Breeze

WLTW - HD2: Broadway Channel (I think this is a NYC exclusive)

WWPR - HD2: DaNu Radio (Russian leased programming)

So my first impression is that the two Top 40 stations, WHTZ and KIIS, have no subchannels, now that iHeart may have discontinued "Evolution."

I also wonder why KEIB, the iHeart LA station that mostly runs syndicated Premiere Networks shows (Rush, Hannity, Beck, etc.) doesn't have an FM HD simulcast. WOR, KFI and KLAC all do.

I think the KFI and KLAC simulcasts pre-date KEIB. That station was launched in 2014 to give those syndicated shows their own LA clear.

I sent a Tweet to @EvolutionRadio and they replied it won't be returning to KIIS FM and to tune in on the IHeartRadio App.

How long is HD Radio going to remain economically viable for the radio station outlets? In the other threads I've seen on HD radio I mentioned that companies like Iheart and Entercom has been putting more emphasis on promoting shows and music exclusives that could only be heard on their apps on their owned affiliates. This gotta be about median audience here like the money demos are more likely to listen to radio on their devices like TV's, Computer, tablet, phones and in some newer cars the app dashboard.

Also isn't user data from radio apps more accurate than PPM or Diary because companies like Iheart, Entercom and Tunein are able to get a direct indication on which albums, songs and podcasts are getting the most listeners?

The problem with Internet metrics is that we don't know who is listening. We know how many, and can get a fuzzy approximation of location via ISPs, but the demographic detail needed for advertisers... or for music decisions... is not there.

Imagine that. Treating all listeners as equal instead of putting them into arbitrary demo boxes. Naturally this was presented as a negative.

IHeart has cut back on HD2 use over the air. It really is all about the app now. Evoution continues on HD2 in Seattle (where it originates from). Outside of the various Pride Radios, Seattle may be the largest market to still have music HD2 signals owned by IHeart
