KIIS, KAMP top two music stations in L.A.

The September PPMs are out and Kiss FM is the #1 station overall. Amp Radio is #3 overall with talker KFI-AM sandwiched between. To see two CHRs in a major market like Los Angeles doing so well is quite an accomplishment.

Nobody agreed with me on the LA board but I think there is room for yet another CHR there. The format is so hot there.

Technically, there are two other CHRs in KPWR (and to a lesser extent, KXOL). Sure, one is rhythmic and one is Spanish/English, but both share a lot of their playlists with KAMP and somewhat with KIIS, so its really a four way race already, especially given the demographics of the market.

Wow no offense but that would be a disaster...

Why? The CHR pie is huge in LA. If you count KPWR, the market currently has 3 English language CHRs...much smaller markets like Albuqerque have 4.

How about your idea of an "all the hits" CHR? While I think it would lose to both KIIS and KAMP it has the potential to beat several other stations. Such a mass appeal, high cume format is not likely to be a disaster.

Wait sorry - I meant that a Cumulus Q100-style adult-leaning CHR would be a disaster in L. A. - I thought that's what KDM meant...

"All the hits" CHRs are great, but they don't seem to work in huge markets - people who like Rhythmic-leaning stuff listen to Rhythmic-leaning CHRs, and people who like adult-leaning stuff listen to Hot AC/Fresh AC

Honestly, I feel like the largest market with an all-the-hits CHR is probably KDWB/Minneapolis (market #16), and beyond that WNKS/Charlotte (market #24) - Q102/Philadelphia and KBKS/Seattle tried it, but they've both since moved back towards Rhythmic-leaning CHR

Z-100 is about an "all the hits" format as you can get.
Same goes for 92.7 Rev FM San Francisco, Kiss 108 Boston, Y-100 Miami, Movin 97.5 Phoenix, 106.1 BLI Long Island, Z-100 Portland, etc.

Not even close - all those stations lean Rhythmic, except Rev-FM San Fran and Movin/Phoenix, which both have terrible ratings

An "all the hits" CHR would be playing Gavin DeGraw, Matt Nathanson, Andy Grammer, Nothing/The Script, etc. - Z100 doesn't even come close

Q102 is about as mainstream sounding as they have been in years. If I Die Young was a huge song for the station, Script and Coldplay are about to enter the Top 10. As a matter of fact they play "Clocks" during the day as a gold.

Z-100 is playing The Script, and The Band Perry, Demi Lovato, Kelly Clarkson, and the music mix overall is pretty broad-based.
Why would a major market CHR play Gavin DeGraw, Matt Nathanson, Andy Grammer, and other Modern AC titles? Are they highly requested songs in the major markets? Selling and appealing a lot to the CHR audience?
They might added Andy Grammer is the song continues to develop and break into the Top 20 on the CHR/Pop charts. Then again they might also add New Boyz "Better With The Lights Off" if it goes Top 20.

Gavin Degraw and Matt Nathanson type of records usually break out at the smaller and medium sized markets, and don't easily get added to major market CHRs. They sound good at a station like 101.1 WIXX Green Bay or 92 Pro Providence.

An all-the-hits station plays the big Pop, Pop/Rock, Rhythmic/Pop, Dance, Hip Hop, and Rock records. Z-100 plays it all.

No - that's why "All The Hits" CHRs don't work in huge markets (which was my original point)

Philadelphia seems to be an exception though (as someone posted) - I feel like it's because their Hot AC doesn't play a lot of big HAC titles, meaning the older end of the CHR demographic isn't diverted from Q102 as much as it is from Z100, KIIS, WKSC, etc.

Even KBIG, the closest thing we have to a Hot AC or Adult CHR in this market, still plays plenty of rhythmic songs. I heard Britney Spears "Toxic" on the way in to work this morning- most Hot ACs wouldn't touch that song as a gold record, but it obviously works in LA.

"All the Hits", if it truly were that, would probably fail in this market. KAMP claims to be "all the hits" but we all know its all the rhythmic hits, and an occassional Adele song- but thats what counts as a hit in this market. Playlists shouldn't have to be static across the CHR format.
