There has been recent discussion about Cumulus CHR's sounding like small market CHR's (playing a lot more recurrents than CC and other groups). CC's KIIS in LA, however, plays a lot of recurrents and songs 10 years old ("Ignition" by R Kelly is on their playlist).

Why does this work in LA but not Chicago or NY? Is there less Hot AC competition in LA?

Z100/New York plays recurrents/gold also - just scanning the last couple days...

Paramore "Misery Business"
Beyonce "Halo"
Kanye West "Stronger"
Nelly "Ride Wit Me"
Cascada "Everytime We Touch"
Kings Of Leon "Use Somebody"
D. J. Sammy and Yanou "Heaven"

And "Ride Wit Me" is from 2001 - even older than "Ignition"

As far as Kiss/Chicago, its ratings suffer in comparison to Z100 or KIIS - maybe playing more recurrents/golds would help it catch up to WTMX

Atlanta-I guess you are right. I only mentioned Z100 because their playlist on their website is only 109 songs.

KIIS, being the heritage CHR that it is, has always had a few gold tracks in their playlist. I remember in the late 80s and early 90s routinely hearing Prince "Kiss" or "1999". Its been the market leader for so long and has such a large cumulative audience that I think it gets away with essentially playing what it wants. Every once in a while they will slightly tweak their playlist to protect from a competitor like KPWR or KAMP.

Also, Hot AC's track record in LA is spotty- KYSR was a sister station and never a huge competitor, and now KBIG is also a sister station that flanks KIIS but is getting high ratings by being more of a rhythmic Adult CHR. The market composition is favorable to these types of stations and Hot AC is essentially a non-starter as the vast majority of young listeners in LA are not white. For example, the under 30 population in the metro is 85% non-white.

Including the suburbs?

I'll have to cite my source, but yes, that includes the suburbs (which is a dubious distinction in Los Angeles). With the exception of a small part of Orange County and a few pockets of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the white population is a minority everywhere.

Even places that are traditionally viewed as white and conservative (aka Orange County) still have a minority-majority population, which only intensifies as you look at younger subsets of the population.
