Killer Format? Your ideas....

So...

Without regurgitating all the well-worn stuff about how radio sucks, specific stations (and/or their owners & management suck...) etc...

I'm wondering what format and airstaff would revitalize radio-listening in the Bay Area? Not some also-ran deal, trailing behind KGO, but a killer, must-listen, exciting station that would make people here take notice in a huge way (hopefully as inclusive a format as possible) and make the rest of the country ask "Why didn't we think of that?"

My ideas run along the "full service" styles of the past... which I know a lot of people think is permanently a relic of the past, too expensive and dated to make it today. Perhaps... If I really knew and had the clout to impliment some format I'd be doing that instead of writing here...

I do work in radio... very low level and without any "cred" to speak of, but I'm just floored by how none of the many people in a position to create a great station here have done so for such a long time. So much of what's happening seems to be "rearrainging the deck chairs" rather than creating something even near-great.

ps: anyone know what's so unique about that station in Knoxville, TN (WIVK-FM) with their 25 share?!?

I say Reverse Classic Rock. That's where they play rock songs backwards 24/7.
Core artists would be Led Zeppelin and The Beatles. :D

So sayeth Rex.

How about a " KRLA" format, Why does every radio station have the similar music? It amazes me you cant hear "The Duke of Earl" unless you listen to Xavier "The X man" on 94.9 Sunday nite!! For years Ive complained about the way radio is and was going!! Lookat it now, Ready for a "Major Overhaul" And Ive posted who I would like to hear, so with out further A-doo, Heres who I dont want to hear In Alphabetical order, Cammy Blackstone,Dean Goss, and Ron Parker!! I dont know a thing about radio, aside from listening and enjoying the Djs and the format, At 53 Ive seen some of the "Best Radio" come and go, Ive been a radio buff since 1962 and my Favorite station was KYA 1260, Gene Nelson, Tony Bigg, and Russ "The Moose Syracuse" !!! I wish KOIT am 1260 would sell out to John Mack Flanagan and let him show CBS how radio works!!! Kenny in Concord

WIVK in Knoxville is a pretty run of the mill station. The reason they get 25+ shares is due to factors unique to Knoxville.

They are the only country station in perhaps the best market for country. They've been the heritage country station for 40 years. I believe they have had on two morning shows in the history of the station. Musically, they are pretty boring, but they are very tied into the community and are the flagship station for UT Football which is about all anybody in Knoxville cares about.

I think it would be impossible for anyone in San Francisco to ever have better numbers than KGO.

Briancraig, I disagree, I would think James Gabbert, could and would knock KGO out of its #1 position! If he had his station back KIOI 101.3,and brought in "The Real Radio People" that being John Mack Flanagan, Chris Edwards, (THE REAL ONE) Lee "Baby Sims" Candi Chamberlin and Bobby Ocean I believe he ,James Gabbert could do it! This guy knows Radio and TV, Ive got alot of respect for him, Its a shame hes retired, the Bay Area needs the Real Pioneers of radio and not the "Artificial DJ s" that weve been saddled with the last decade!! Any idea how the ratings where back in the 70s when we had "Real Radio" aka KYA KFRC? I tried talk radio the only guy whos worth listening to is Michael Savage on " KNEW!! Kenny in Concord

Here is my view on Bay Area radio....IT'S GOTTEN WORSE!!!!! About 75% of ALL music stations in this market
play the same 'ol crap! I hate to admit it...we have NO Country station, NO oldies station, NO CHR/ Pop station and NO adult standrds station. If we had a station for every genre of music I mentioned, we would be set! But, at least there are more and more radio stations are streaming on the World Wide Web.

WILD is crap - the CHR lane is WIDE OPEN-

KMEL IS ON FIRE< MOVIN IS ON FIRE<

i like the idea of classic hip hop

For music formats I think it's all about Classic(fill-in-the-blank) now. It has to be music that will appeal to large numbers of at-work adult listeners. Any young skewing format has too much of a disadvantage against ipods and online stations that can give hardcore music fans more of what they want.
