KILT vs KBME...Let the talk begin!

> KILT still commands a lead in slow Houston sports talk market!

Interesting to finally see the breakdowns of male demos, and the head to head afternoon drive numbers. The Sports Animal is getting slaughtered so far. I'm a regular fan of Pallilo, but I wonder if he might be too intellectual for the sports audience...there are a lot of listeners who want "homers" and "guy talk." And Pallilo going solo might be a disadvantage--with a partner the presentation is more like listening to a conversation instead of a monologue...which might subconsciously be part of 610's appeal.

790's lack of a local morning show is also hurting them--they need to do something about that ASAP. Still, I think CC will give it another year and try to build it out more. Besides, I'm not sure what would be a viable alternative for 790--Air America has often been mentioned, but it seems the buzz about that network has died down quite a bit.

DFW's sportstalk numbers have long been higher than in Houston, as it seems there are more passionate fans up there. Houston has a reputation as a tepid sports town, full of fair weather support. The ratings comparison between the two markets seems to confirm that, expecially when you add in the numbers for ESPN 103.3 in DFW.

I would think 790 having JT the Brick from 10-1 at night would help them, since its suposadly the number 1 sports talk show in America. Im a huge fan myself, and people from Houston will call in, but since its new to the city alot of people just may not know about it.

I don't get it either. But I guess the numbers just haven't shown up yet for KBME. I wold have expected more from this supposed sports giant.

Houston to me is one of the most balanced sports cities in the country.

Whereas Boston is a baseball town, SA is a basketball town and Dallas is still primarily a football town, Houston's 3 major sports teams' games are regularly well-attended. There are just as many rockets fans as Stros' fans and for a new football city, the Texans have quite a few.

Houston is a great sports town. A lot better than say Cincinatti or Washington.

Houston is a tepid sports town? Attendance numbers do not agree.

Check all of my previous post. There is a huge "fair weather fan" factor at work here. The Astros are doing well, the Rockets are improving, and there's still the freshness factor with the Texans. But if the teams start to stink, you're going to see a lot of empty seats. The Rockets are still not coming anywhere close to filling the ToyBox on most nights. And if the Texans regress, you'll start seeing more empty seats at Reliant. Look at past numbers when the teams weren't doing well--the old Compaq Center was half empty, The Astrodome was a cavern, and we all remember all those blacked out Oiler games during their bad years. Most people here don't know who or what the Aeros are. On the college level, Rice and U of H have to pretty much beg for fans to come to their games. We won't even talk about what a bust the ev1.net bowl has been (The what? Point made.)

790 has to beef up their local presence if they are going to effectively compete against 610. They have yet to give most sportstalk fans convincing reasons to make a change, as the ratings have shown.

I just wonder if 610 is going to let Charlie come back once KBME fails. If he would not have sued them to get out of is no-compete they might have let him but I think he is going to be stuck at KTRH doing sports beat again once they move the program back there.
