Kim Amidon back on the radio

With Jhani Kaye at the helm, and bringing in big-name hosts (Even I know who Kim is, and I'm from Salt Lake City), it looks like The Wave is positioning itself to knock out KOST and create the next generation of AC. Whatever it turns out to be.

Could Kaye beat KOST with the Wave? Sure, he's really got it out for them, but it's not happening just yet and the staff at KOST might not just roll over and give up just yet. They just came off a number one rating period so it's not like they're just some also ran. Funny, lots of KOST haters now that Kaye's PD of the Wave. And no offense to Ms. Amidon, but you'd think she's Mother Teresa the way everyone goes on about her. Was it dumb for CC to fire her. Yeah, it was. Should everyone at KOST suffer for it? No, it was a stupid corporate decision. But I doubt you'll hear a peep out of anyone there. They need jobs like anyone else. The real problem for KOST isn't the competition. It's that someone at CC has turned them into another station. Lately they don't sound like the KOST that LA listeners have known and loved. That's what could make them ripe for a fall and Kaye will take advantage of that more than anything else. KOST still has a good staff, most hired by Kaye. They have a great PD too, but I think someone has tied her hands. Someone who obviously hasn't got a clue because some of the changes in the last year make no sense. I mean, have you heard those new jingles? Ugh!

Calguy, "someone who hasn't got a clue" describes everyone in the CC corporate suite.

Rhetorical question: Why hire good people if you won't let them do their job? A question for the ages, I suppose. I guess it's what happens when you glorify salespeople and promote them to management.

No argument there DoctorWu. There seem to be a lot of tied up people on that end of the CC Burbank building. I was however speaking of one clueless person in particular. Someone who has power over the programming people on that station and this person just doesn't seem to understand the format. It's sort of out of this person's area of experience and it shows.

I started listening to KOST in 1984 because I had to because the company I worked for played it all day. I listened to Mark and Kim for years - then Ted and Brian. I know that Kim is not the second coming of Christ - but I truly enjoy listening to her. Having worked in the big business world for many years now ... :D I do understand that the bottom line is money money money .. with that being said the way that her firing went down was wrong.

I still listen to the morning show, as well as Karen and Brian. They also play it at my job so it's around me 24/7. With that being said I don't think that the current KOST staff should be blamed and punished for the sins of Corporate America - however the station has changed. Little subtle changes here and there over the past 2 years. It's definately not the same but what are you going to do about it?? Life goes on - best of luck to Kim and to KOST and to Kaye and needless to say it's going to be interesting the next few months ....

I'd like to toss in a few cents to this thread:

1. Great to see that Jhani is grabbing some available talent. That means he's thinking about improving the Wave in every way he can. Congrats to Kim, I'll do my best to catch her shift on my iPhone from where I'm at.

2. From the outside looking in, I see these posts throwing stones and crying over every little change at KOST makes me laugh because the only people who seem to be crying is Clear Channel based on the level of Ratings and Revenues along with the cost cutting they've done.

3. Jhani is a smart PD and really knows the complete story of the LA market. When NY took the heritage station of KCBS to Jack, there were plenty of pools out there betting on changes at KRTH. However Jhani has found KRTH's sweet spot. Now at the Wave, he needs to take a station with an already thin operating expense line and declining bottom line and hopefully improve it in every way. With my online listening, I can hear the changes and they are interesting.

Interesting that you should bring up heritage. Yes, Kaye knew the heritage of KRTH and made sure that it wasn't ignored. Instead of sweeping changes, he stayed with the basic Drake/Boss Radio format which is a huge part of LA's radio history. He kept the same jingles and themes and improved the music. He can use his knowledge of the market to improve KTWV as well. Sadly KOST's heritage is being ignored. I mean, why would they make so many changes? Changes that don't improve the station one bit. They fired long time hosts that were quite popular. They dropped their old jingle company for re-sings of another station's jingles. They're playing a ton of sweepers too. At least they still boast personalities that are synonymous with KOST's heritage, but there are fewer of them. Call it crying if you will. I call it complaining. That's what people do on these boards.

Always wondered how the Wave got to where it is. Lots of voice tracking, small budget, syndicated morning show etc... Then again, that seems to be the game plan for most stations now. You see it all the time. Someone starts making changes at a great station for the sake of saving cash or just making changes and by the time management realizes it, its too late.
KRTH was saved and the Wave can be too. As for KOST, only time will tell. They're doing well now, but who knows where they'll be in a year from now. Too bad the powers that be don't read these boards. If they did, they might come around and see what a terrible thing they're doing to radio. I've said it before, radio is it's own worst enemy.

I also have to wonder why somebody in corporate @ CC has initiated so many wholesale and totally unnecessary changes at KOST; there was nothing wrong with the previous set of jingles.

I certainly don't need to be inundated with a nonstop avalanche of sweepers every single hour; I know the station's dial position and call letters, and like millions of others throughout the LA area, overkill only increases my dislike for such boneheaded practices.

There's definitely a place in the market for KTWV's 'repositioning' under Mr. Kaye; the music at KOST isn't nearly as focused as it used to be.

Playing Motown classics from the sixties makes no sense, and playing artists such as Blondie, Pat Benatar, Eddie Money, and other classic rockers is equally perplexing.

You know Marv-LA I have a few sources in that building and I can tell for sure that these changes are coming from another programmer in the building. These friends I have are not too forthcoming about this PD, they're scared and who can blame them. They don't want to lose their jobs even though they're at other stations there. They should be concerned about Jhani Kaye and with good reason. From what I can discern this "other PD" is quite confident that he has all the answers and every change leaves the people there shaking their heads. KOST used to be very listenable, but you are correct. There are too many interruptions and the station's music flow and selection isn't what it used to be. The new jingles suck and that doesn't help either. From what I hear on the AC board these jingles are being used on a lot of CC's AC stations now so they must have some deal with the company that creates them.

They have a great PD and still have a pretty good staff, what's left of them. But like any other station, they are powerless. It's just like KRTH before Jhani Kaye arrived, good staff, bad decisions. It's sad to see a heritage station like KOST being dragged down like this. Too bad CC can't see what's happening, but either they're blind, or they think this is the right way to go...
