Kimmel moving to 11:35/10:35

http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/21/jimmy-kimmel-to-move-to-1130-in-january-abc-announces/?smid=tw-share

Jimmy Kimmel will jump to the big stage in late-night television in January, moving to 11:35 p.m. where he will take on the two titans of that time slot, David Letterman and Jay Leno.

ABC announced the move Tuesday, framing it as a bold effort to seize leadership in late-night entertainment.

ABC has touted its leadership in ratings over both Mr. Letterman on CBS and Mr. Leno on NBC’s Tonight” show, but that has been with the news program “Nightline.” ABC’s management has for years tried to replace that program with an entertainment show because of the possibility to increase revenue in the time period.

The move of Mr. Kimmel is risky because it will displace “Nightline” to 12:35 a.m. weeknights, but ABC will compensate for that move by adding an hour edition of “Nightline” in prime time at 9 p.m. Fridays, starting in March.

You beat me to the punch, Rob ;D

It's a pretty interesting turn of events, as ABC has tried for years to put a similar show directly Leno and Letterman, but at the same time, Nightline has been an institution in that slot (in most markets anyway) for more than 30 years...heck, it's even beat both CBS and NBC in recent years at 11:35pm ET/PT.

I think it's more of a proactive approach to keep Kimmel satisfied at ABC, for the fear he might bolt elsewhere, although there's not a lot of options outside of cable and syndication.

This may be the biggest mistake ABC has made since scheduling the infamous "Turn-On".

I think much of "Nightline"'s success, especially of late, is because it's not a comedy-oriented talk/variety show and is in fact something different.

Moving Jimmy Kimmel to 11:30 (ET/PT) will make the late-night talk/variety marketplace even more crowded.

As crowded as the 11:30 P.M. timeslot is for talk shows, it will be more so when Arsenio Hall's comeback begins next year (most stations carrying that show will do so at 11:30 ET/PT); I can even see TBS move Conan O'Brien back a half-hour so his show also begins at 11:30.

This means that come September of 2013, in most cities, Jimmy Kimmel, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Arsenio Hall, Steven Colbert and Conan O'Brien may all be head-to-head, all starting at the same time. Six pretty-much similar shows could divide-up the viewership so much that none is a real "winner" in the ratings.

I don't think Kimmel will do as well at 11:30 as he has at Midnight.

ABC press release: http://www.abcmedianet.com/Web/dnr/dispDNR.aspx?id=082112_01 .

Wild card: If Governor Romney is elected President, could "Nightline"'s move back to 12:30 A.M. ET/PT be delayed until after the inauguration??

Looks like the pie slices are getting smaller and smaller. Consider it from a booking point of view. Who will be appearing on these shows? Will Universal movie stars only be able to appear on NBC? Will Disney stars only be appearing on Kimmel? It seemed like NBC tied up the Olympic athletes until the event was long done.

I think ABC will regret this. The news junkies will probably tune into reruns of the BBC on PBS and give up on Nightline. Is ABC giving up the 20/20 franchise on Friday for Nightline?

Maybe Kimmel can team up with Regis for a restart of the "Joey Bishop" show! That worked so well!

From what I gather, the Friday Nightline will serve as a lead-in to 20/20, since it's supposed to only be one-hour long. Nightline Friday will probably debut once Shark Tank completes its upcoming season in late February/early March. ABC also said that What Would You Do? would be moved to another time period TBD (if so, it would probably be best served to fill a timeslot to replace a cancelled show, like what ABC has previously done with Primetime Nightline and 20/20).

(all times reflect the Central time zone, except for the quoted times)

I wonder how WEAR-TV in Pensacola, Florida will handle "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and "Nightline" after the changes take effect (they usually broadcast "Nightline" at 11:00 p.m. and "Jimmy Kimmel Live" at 11:30 p.m. after local news programming between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.)? I hope they change the way they treat those programs by January.

What if one of the other candidates for the presidency of the United States gets elected (Barack Obama, Ronald Paul, Jill Stein, Gary Johnson, etcetera)? Could either one of them cause ABC to delay moving "Nightline"? I don't believe a delay will occur as a result of a certain person getting elected to the presidency.

I can't imagine any serious news junkies were watching this new version of Nightline. Definitely not at all like the BBC.

Nightline began as a nightly update on the latest developments in the Iran Hostage Crisis back in the 70's.

With recent developments in that part of the world, they might be forced to bring it back before the year is out.

Didn't I read an article this week that several members of Leno's staff were laid off and Leno had to take a pay cut to keep more from loosing their jobs. Great time for another 10:30 late night show. ???

WEAR ABC 3 knew what they were doing when they refused to clear Kimmel back when the show started. Finally clearing it years later in the middle of the night was a good move too... nothing else was on OTA to compete with but infomercials. I hope they leave the late night lineup alone here in the Mobile DMA.

Didn't WSB also balk when Kimmel was new? I wonder if they'll have the balls to tell ABC to shove it?

Nightline lost much of it's luster when Koppel was unceremoniously shown the door. Since then it's been a revolving door of ABC presenters without near the journalistic clout Koppel had. It's a shame really, ABC News has fallen on hard times since Peter Jennings passed and has never really recovered.

Interesting to note Ted Koppel's parting words on his last show of Nightline (he is speaking indirectly to us the viewers and directly to his soon to be former staff):

"Trust me, the transition from one anchor to another is not that big a deal. Cronkite begat Rather, Chancellor begat Brokaw, Reynolds begat Jennings. And each of them did a pretty fair job in his own right. You've always been very nice to me, so give this new anchor team for Nightline a fair break. If you don't, I promise you the network will just put another comedy show in this time slot. Then you'll be sorry. And that's our report for tonight. I'm Ted Koppel in Washington, and from all of us here at ABC News, good night."

Am I the only one who thinks maybe ABC is trying to be proactive about this? Letterman & Leno won't be around forever and I don't think lightning will strike twice when it comes to Arsenio. Three or four years down the road, ABC might just be in the position it wants to be in.

As far as Nightline goes, just cancel it already like you should have when Koppel went away. With CNN, MSNBC, Fox News and the others now around, there really is no need for a show like Nightline anymore (especially if you want the young demos)

I don't think this is a bad decision for ABC for many of the same reasons adam95 just listed, although CNN, Fox and MSNBC are all in reruns of their primetime shows at 11:35 eastern.

For me it would be a bad move because I like monologues and funny parts while the guests leave me to turn the channel. So far I've been getting my fix with (all times Pacific)

11:00 Conan
11:35 Leno
12:05 Jimmy
12:37 Craig

First guest comes on, switch over. :)

Didn't I read an article this week that several members of Leno's staff were laid off and Leno had to take a pay cut to keep more from loosing their jobs.

You sure did. And if you read the whole article you would have noticed that it said Leno and his show were still being paid at prime time levels because he got a pay bump before his failed 10pm show went on the air. The recent cuts were to merely bring him and his show's budget back to what they were before NBC asked him to do two shows.

I think ABC is hoping he will be the last man standing when Leno and Letterman are gone. I also think they hope viewers will stay in the habit of watching the ABC affiliate after the news. It's a good plan that keeps nightline on the air.

From the NYTimes article:

ABC’s management has for years tried to replace that program with an entertainment show because of the possibility to increase revenue in the time period.

The rea$on clear to me!
