Kimmel returns Tuesday

If Kimmel's contact is up next year anyway, this is probably just Disney minimizing the bad press they received from taking him off now.

I wonder if Disney was waiting until after the big memorial service was over with. I believe all the networks, including ABC, covered it. The timing of Kimmel's return might be based on that
Maybe on their own streaming/cable news channels, but not OTA. CBS and Fox had NFL commitments, NBC had track & field, and ABC aired the WNBA playoffs.

Locally in Phoenix, the 3 independents (KTVK/3, KUTP/45, and KASW/61) aired local news coverage, as did Telemundo's KTAZ/39.

The initial ratings will be bigger than they've had in months. Wait another month and let's see what the viewership is then. It will be back to where it was.
Gotta do this again:

Total Audience:

1. Gutfeld (FOX): 3.29 million (Gutfeld airs at 10 p.m. Eastern/9 p.m. Central, so HUT levels are higher)
2. Late Show with Stephen Colbert (CBS): 2.42 million (airs at 11:35 p.m. Eastern/10:35 p.m. Central)
3. Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC): 1.77 million (11:35 Eastern/10:35 Central)
4. Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (NBC): 1.19 million (11:35/10:35)
5. The Daily Show (Comedy Central): 994,000 (airs at 11:00 p.m. Eastern/10:00 p.m. Central)
6. Late Night with Seth Meyers (NBC): 900,000 (airs at 12:37 a.m. Eastern/11:37 p.m. Central)

18-49 Adults:

1. Gutfeld (FOX) 238,000
2. Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC): 220,000
3. Late Show with Stephen Colbert (CBS): 219,000
4. The Daily Show (Comedy Central) 190,000
5. Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (NBC): 157,000
6. Late Show with Seth Meyers (NBC): 111,000

Assuming Paramount/CBS can't be pressured (and given the success with Disney ABC, I'd think it's worth a shot), Colbert's gone next fall. If even half of Colbert's numbers default to Jimmy (who now has a lot of good will for having stared down Trump's folks), that's 2.98 million total and 330,000 in the 18-49 demo.

I think Man Show reruns might be cheaper and bring in similar numbers of viewers.

Oh, you do?

The Man Show...hello, back there in 2002.

Calling this out for emphasis.

Paramount/CBS is on its own trajectory, so I doubt if pressure will do very much there. (I also fear for the future credibility of CBS News, but that's another topic for another time.) If one takes that as a given, then there are going to 2.42m viewers looking for somewhere else to go. Jon Stewart and John Oliver, each once a week, aren't likely to be considered enough of a replacement. Kimmel's show is a natural destination for such viewing.

I used to think Kimmel was kind of a lightweight. I don't think that any more. I can't be the only one who's had that change in perception.

Edit: I may be overoptimistic, so we'll have to see what kind of accommodation was struck. Consider the above statements to be provisional.

I like Kimmel in general but yeah. The monologue is usually solid (very L.A., but...). His interviews tend to be good. The "let's see how stupid people on Hollywood Boulevard are" segments just kill it for me.

But if Stephen is gone (and he probably is), and given the testicular fortitude Jimmy showed the last five days, yeah---I'll set the DVR for him every night.

Note the Sinclair owned ABC affiliates as of this time will pre-empt Jimmy Kimmel's return to TV until further notice.

Here is Chairman Carr's statement today as he responds to the Jimmy Kimmel Situation.

Dopey move. Whatever their motivation, they had an audience that watched Kimmel that's been pissed off for most of a week. Now ABC's putting the show back on and those folks are being told "no" by their local affiliate.

There aren't enough happy MAGA folk to make up for what Sinclair's gonna lose in this deal. Long-term, they may get an easier go with the Trump administration, but they have TV stations to run and you can count on the Kimmel fans watching the local news on another channel.

It's damage control time at the FCC. I love it! Nice way to spin it Chairman Carr. Did he just finally remember what the FCC can and cannot do?
