Kinda dissappointed in Houston radio

Gee I remember coming to Houston on several trips in the late 90s and throughout the 2000s before officially moving here in January of 08. I thought the stations were a breath of fresh air and was pleased with a variety of stuff on the air...compared to most of the crap that was in San Antonio. Now that I have lived here for almost two months, I have to say that I am overall not so impressed with Houston radio as I was. Granted, there are a few stations I enjoy, particurlary formats that were unvailable in SA, but other than that, there are some crappy stations.

KHits-too much classic rock
The Point-it was cool at first but now I grew tired of the playlist. If I watned to hear Bon Jovi 24/7 I'd put Slippery When Wet on repeat in my CD player
Sunny-probably because it's a female targeted station
Mix-If I wanted to hear Nickelback and Matchbox 20 24/7, I'd buy their music
The Buzz-wtf???
The Arrow-safe classic rock hits..YAHN
93Q-too much KLIT bashing, come on
Party 93.3-reminds me of the beat in SA. If I hear Cyclone one more time I hope a cyclone hits their tower!
oh yeah....wayyyyyyyyy too much spanish. Seriously, we need 3 spanish pop stations???

Stations I do enjoy:

JackFM-seems to be the same everywhere you go, but it's nice to put on
Magic-finally, I get an R&B station!
KILT-wow they don't feel the need to play Chattahoochie every 3 hours
The Box-what an hip hop station should sound like, and reggeton-free!
Country Legends-good station, but I can barely get a clear signal. Why no DJs? It wouldnt' hurt to expand the PL a little more.
The Wave-while they can ease up on the SJ cover songs (this annoyed Kenny G enough to ditch Arista), I find it real smooooth and relaxing. If they were to flip it, change the name to "The Yacht" and add a lot of "yacht rock"(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yacht_rock).
Praise-praise the Lord! an alternative to white-wing religious
KTSU-great programming
KACC-wow a descent rock station that doesn't overstaurate on the typical safe CR playlist
KUHF-I thought it was odd that H-town doesn't have a seperate NPR and classical staiton, but it doesn't bother me too much anymore. The classical is quality! It's nice to hear more vocal music on there as well.

I'm not too sure what's good on the AM side, but perhaps someone has good suggestions on news, sports and talk that isn't far off the right or left. No standards on AM either????

I travel and listen to radio in markets all over the counrty. Radio in a visiting market is always going to sound interesting and fresh becasue its something different than what you usually hear. After spending time in a city or moving there, it becomes routine and predictible. Its called human nature. If it's new, it's exciting for a while then becomes boring.
It occurs no matter the market, so Houston is no different than any other city.
I've experienced this a number of times in my travels.

good points. i have to admit I like (gulp) Jack. I agree with you, well, on pretty much everything. As for "it's human nature." Well, you're right too. I go to SA every couple of weeks and really love KISS. Hard Rock on the Radio; what a concept! I'm sure if i lived there for more than a week, it would get old too.

Here's my beef: Why let it get old and tired in the first place? Oh yeah, mainstream music today sucks.

I like to play a little game in my car. I run right up the dial, from the bottom to the top, and I try to find new music. Nothing special, just something released in the last year. I might post something when i get to 3. But that's a WHOLE other story.

ok, I've ranted. I need a drink.

I agree about every city is no different. you can think C Channel for that. ha

"That? That....was a pigeon." -Officer Bar-Brady, South Park

The fact is that nobody's listening to the listeners. You're not crazy and it's not just a matter of perception, sdh483. You heard what you liked in the late '90's through 2000, because back then, the business model was different. Jocks were live, station promotions consisted of more than a vanload of teenagers standing at a car lot, and playlists were varied according to the tastes of the market.

It's not just all in your head. Things really have changed.

Hey SDH483,

Thanks for the KACC compliment! I owe you a beer....or two.....or three...... ;D

Make it a New Castle

The station made me start listening to classic rock again. The typical classic rock cookie cutter playlist (light my fire, more than a feeling, sweet home alabama, ect) was driving me away from rock music in general. Even if I was p*ss drunk at a bar, I couldn't stand hearing Freebird (and I refuse to play it on Guitar Hero). Even when you do play those typical songs like the doobies long train running, it just sounds different (and tolerable) than if it was plyaing on another station. I don't know, perhaps its nice to hear a DJ and not just a computer.

Is it me or does the other side of radio have a differnt (and better) sound compared to the commercial staitons?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, that conjues up some thoughts, doesn't it? I don't know much about klit bashing, but 93Q has been bashing KILT for years.

I changed the dial to 104.1 KRBE today, I almost passed out. It sounded like The Box 97.9. KRBE sure has changed since I moved here in 1994. Back in the 90s till around 99 or 2000 that station was awesome. I miss the new music zone and all the djs they used to have, especially Paul Cubby:)

Oddly enough, it sounds like Mix 96.5 at times. My observation is you never know what you are gonna get when tuning to KRBE. Lots of nickleback, kelly clarkson, matchbox 20. I'd be interested to see how the TSL is on KRBE.

Only stations I really listen to now in Houston is maybe the Arrow, The buzz and The box, but other than that, yeah I agree, Houston radio was a LOT better back in the day. HDRadio in Houston is not much better. I like Austin HDRadio better than Houston HD selections. I dont hardly listen to HD Radio because of the coverage problems... I'm lucky enough to recieve Victoria radio also, 100.9 the bar is a good Rock station, I wasnt sure how they will make it after fliping from Hiphop but they sound pretty decent now.

Houston radio IMHO has been lame since the mid 80's. Austin, Dallas and even SA have been far superior since. It's hard for me to be critical now because I haven't listened to Houston FM stations in over 2 years since I purchased satellite radio and bought an IPOD. I do still listen to AM regularly for sports and political talk.

Bottom-line, I gave up on Houston FM a couple of years ago and if I had know how great sat radio is and adapted to MP3/IPOD earlier I would have given up FM years earlier.

adguy: I'm in the same boat as you -- I've only listened to AM the past few years, and my music has come from iPod/satellite, and it's the same for most of the people I know.

I would think ad space on Houston radio (and maybe in general) would be a hard sell these days, unless you're selling lowest-common-denominator items and services.

"disappointed?" How about some stronger verbage? Oh, I dont know, mmmm? How about ....

SUXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX !

The good news is, I can drive thru a few small towns sometimes and hear actual human interaction, and songs I'm not sick of, not to mention way less annoying, overproduced, "imaging." If I'm ever GM somewhere, and I'm allowed to create, (which is the only way I'd take a job anymore) the 1st person who uses the terms "imaging," or "listener benefit," or "positioning statement," will be shot immediately and thrown out the window.

I avoided the word "suuuuuxxxxxx" because that's what I think of radio in San Antonio. I agree with a previous post on how moving to a new city, the stations are a breath of fresh air but eventually I grew tired with the repetition and lack of innovation, ie 106.9 The Point.
