KING 5 and Gannett

So i'm wondering, how will KING 5 will change under Gannett's ownership?  I already know KING will probably end up with a new graphics package that goes with the other Gannett stations by next year.  Here's KARE 11 for example from Minneapolis:

Also from Gannett owned WXIA from Atlanta:

Anybody think the news there will change?  IMO I don't see them changing anything, unlike Sinclair's ownership of KOMO and the other Fisher stations.

They're going to add Kokomo as bumper music in and out of every commercial break in newscasts.

Lord, I hope not. The last thing local news needs is lingering lower thirds - especially when they have no purpose except to distract. KING does need a bit of a graphical freshening, but Gannett's corporate package is totally unnecessary.

Oh, come on. Cut Sinclair a bit of slack (although I'm no fan of them myself). I expect we'll still see the same lot behind the desk and otherwise for at least the immediate future. Same for KING. Unfortunately I don't see KOMO investing in local programming (other than news) anytime soon. If anything, we'll probably see some Ring of Honor Wrestling on weekends.

There is no guarantee that Gannett will change KING's graphics. Although, Gannett, from my understanding, does like conformity. We shall see. Talent will stay, probably due to grandfathered contracts, but Jean has got to be nearing retirement, and frankly there is nobody currently on staff that could replace her.

Sinclair and KOMO may be a different story. KOMO's ratings have not been stellar of late, and I would expect every element of KOMO-TV to be completely studied and eventually replaced. Dan Lewis is probably the only guy safe. Keep in mind, Seattle will be Sinclair's largest market.

What about Margaret Larson for evening newscasts? Or Maybe they will make Lori Matsukawa a permanent evening anchor? After all, Lori is on the evening newscasts quite often.

Margaret Larson was doing the 11PM news with Dennis Bounds around 2000 or 2001, and maybe she needs to come back to the anchor desk. She's doing good with "New Day Northwest" as well.

And don't forget Joyce Taylor! Joyce was originally hired (first stint at KING) to eventually replace Jean.

NOBODY can truly replace Jean Enersen. She's legendary, the longest running local TV news anchor in America and if Gannett DARES replace her before she's ready to retire, they will NEVER live it down. She's the Queen of KING...and still going strong.

They had an on-air story earlier this week about having cake in the newsroom to celebrate her 45th anniversary @ KING.
Unfortunately, Tribune is somewhat at the other end of the spectrum as at any point during the year, I probably could not tell you who is anchoring their newscasts (partly because they change so frequently, and partly because they are the long-shot in the horse race).

I wonder if Jean Enersen could anchor the news until she dies. She could be 85 and still doing KING 5 News! ;)

....and if she does, more power to her!

Jean has truly achieved legendary status in the Seattle market. Forty-five years at KING5, forty-one of those as the primary evening anchor! Let's make no mistake -- Dennis Bounds is a nice guy, but KING 5 News is all about JEAN ENERSEN!

Now, onward to her 50th anniversary on KING5 News @ 5 and 6:30pm.

One newsperson who I really miss is Carolyn Douglas. I always thought that she was underused at KING5.

Yeah, Enerson can probably write her own ticket, despite an ownership change. Fact is, she is not seen as frequently as just 10 years ago, but that's OK. She probably has Johnny Carson-like vacation benefits, and any new owner should respect her decision to leave when she wants. Though I predict even when she leaves the anchor chair, she will continue to be involved with KING, via specials and what-not.

By far, the biggest and most recognized newscaster in Seattle TV history. And perhaps one the most famous local female newscasters in the country, even in market #13. If you are ever in Seattle, or within range, try to catch her. A true legend.

As an added bonus here is Jean reacting to a blooper that made the national tubes.

Jean has had generous vacation benefits since 80's. KING realized that they had a great talent and treated her accordingly. Back in the 80's when Jean had children, she cut back to the 5pm newscast only (sometimes anchoring at 6:30pm as well). Then, in the late80's/early 90's, she added the 11pm newscast back into her schedule but worked only Mon-Thurs. Later on in the 90's, she went back to 5/6:30 and takes Fridays off, too.

So, Jean has been treated well. Lori Matsukawa does very well at 10pm and 11pm and is well liked in the Seattle community.

Jean is now 69.

Has anyone ever seen anyone looking better at that age?

She is amazing.

She is TRULY amazing, but I am sure that she has had some "work" done on her over the years. :D

She's gotta go for 50 years at KING 5 News!!!

Think of all the male anchors KING has gone through since Jean started: John Raye, Mike James, Aaron Brown, Don Porter (did he actually co-anchor with Jean?), Barry Judge, and current anchor Dennis Bounds. I've probably left out a couple.

Her first co-anchor was the late Jim Harriott on the 11:00 cast. Also, anyone remember Steve Edelman, a KING-TV morning talk show host who was briefly moved into the evening anchor chair in the mid-70's? He didn't last long, eventually moving to Minneapolis and ending up with a bit part in the movie "Fargo".

How did I forget the legendary Jim Harriott? I don't remember Steve Edelman.

I have an autographed photo of John Raye, whom I believe was Seattle's first African-American anchor.

Yeah, and I hardly remember John Raye.

Harriott had the distinction of working for all three of the big three network affiliates in Seattle, (KING, KIRO, and KOMO) in that order, and also worked for a public station in Tacoma. Wow. He also had a nice cameo in the blockbuster movie, "War Games", starring Matthew Broderick, playing, guess what, a newscaster.

For those geeks like me really into this, his stint at KIRO was odd, in that they were experimenting with tri-anchors. Yes, three anchors at the desk...in this case it was Jim, Kathy Smith (an import from Portland), and Kim Mariner, who was a mainstay at KIRO for many years, last heard was doing radio on KNX Los Angeles. He DID have a great voice. Not sure of an update on him. Gary Justice did sports, and of course the ever present, but now deceased Harry Woppler on weather.
