KING-FM CP For Higher power

I see that KING-FM has applied for a power increase, still with a directional antenna. A perusal of the radio-locator.com website shows hardly any improvement in coverage, so it may be done to improve the city-grade signal. By the way, can any techie explain the reason why KING-FM is directional in the first place; there aren't any powerful 97.9s, 98.1s or 98.3s for miles and miles and miles.

98.3 KPPK-FM Ranier, OR

97.7 KFMY-FM Oakville, WA (not second adjacent, but still there)

97.9 KRRC Portland, OR

There are probably more in there somewhere...it is my understanding that any upgrade to KING-FM has to respect the protected contours of the above named stations and probably others too.

The other Tiger Mountain-bsed FM's all operate at 57,000 watts as well (which is less than maximum for their HAAT or 66,000 watts @ 714 mts--) Is that due to short spacing or a master antenna design issue. KING is reducing their tower height slightly (by 30 feet) so I assume they could not boost their power from the original antenna.

Thanks for any info.
By the way, why don't more TV and FM broadcasters transmit from that sight? It is much better than Queen Anne/Capital Hill and better than Cougar Mountain.

One of the stations on the master antenna is moving to a nearby tower. It looks like all of the remaining stations will increase power to make up the difference in radiation. Since most of those stations are directional, I don't think it has to do with protection.

Thanks. I suspected it had to do with the master antenna -- The same thing occured at the Empire State Building in NY. The big dilemma there, however, was the fact that the stations were weak class "B"'s to begin with and they operated at 5,400 watts instead of 7,200 watts at 1220'. That made a big difference in the outlying areas. I don't think the power change on Tiger Mountain will have any appreciable effect on the signal. <P ID="signature">______________

CKSR 98.3 Abbotsford, BC

KPPK 98.3 Rainer, WA

CBTQ 98.1 Port Alberni, BC

Stations on Tiger usually have a pretty strong signal in all directions. Plus the Canadian stations are protected.

Why waste signal to the East into the mountains! All the population they want to serve is N-W-S. So they didn't put antenna bays on that side of the tower.
