Bryan Lowe, 26-year veteran at KING FM and internet broadcasting pioneer, has been named Operations/Program Director of KING FM.
In announcing the promotion, KING FM General Manager Jennifer Ridewood applauded Lowe’s successful launch of internet broadcasting 10 years ago, taking KING.org “from a start-up to one of the most popular classical streams in the world.” She cited his long-term commitment to the station, to classical music, and to the Northwest as “huge benefits to our community.” Lowe’s appointment is effective immediately.
Lowe is a Northwest native who started at KING FM in 1979 as an announcer. He has been a member of many local groups, including the Seattle Youth Symphony, Seattle Philharmonic, Bellevue Philharmonic, Civic Light Opera orchestra, Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan Society orchestra, and recently was a featured playing theremin with the Federal Way Symphony. Lowe taught fifth grade at Woodin Elementary in Woodinville for seven years and believes KING FM should reach out to the next generation of listeners and build on current KING FM efforts in the community.
“I grew up listening to KING FM and dreamed as a child of being a KING FM announcer. This is music I love and sharing it with our listeners through KING FM is a dream come true,” Lowe said.
Lowe follows Bob Goldfarb in the radio programming role. Goldfarb, a consultant, took on KING FM programming when 25-year veteran Peter Newman retired two years ago. Goldfarb will resume his consulting practice full-time and has been working with Lowe to make the transition.
“We appreciate Bob taking a break from his consulting business to focus on KING FM after Peter Newman retired,” Ridewood said. “We respect his desire to return to consulting and appreciate the work he has done. Both Bryan and I look forward to working with Bob in the future.”
KING-FM, a commercial radio station, makes substantial annual contributions to the arts in the Puget Sound region, thanks to an unparalleled ownership arrangement created by the Bullitt family. Legendary broadcaster Dorothy Bullitt created KING-FM in 1947 specifically to bring classical music to the Northwest. That visionary act was just one of many achievements that marked her leadership of King Broadcasting Company, where she served the public through excellence in radio and television until she died in 1989.
The ownership of King Broadcasting Company passed to her daughters, Priscilla Collins and Harriet Bullitt upon her death. They decided in 1992 to sell most of the holdings of King Broadcasting and devote themselves to philanthropy. Because the sale of KING-FM might have jeopardized the future of classical music on the radio in the Seattle-Tacoma market, however, they put KING-FM under the control of a newly created company, Classic Radio, Inc., which is the present licensee of KING-FM. In turn, they donated their shares in that for-profit company to Beethoven, a nonprofit corporation.
