King George's Early Christmas 'Present'

According to DCRTV today, 'King' George Michael was told Tuesday after taping his sports show at WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. that it was his last show. Michael had been sportscaster there for many years after his dj years at WFIL and WABC. He gave up his sports anchoring last year but had continued hosting weekly shows. He had a Sunday night sports syndicated tv show for many years from WRC, too. Not sure if he'll go elsewhere or just say "Good Evenin' Retirement, How Are Ya'" and retire to his Maryland ranch.

George is a class act. He gave up his nightly sportscasting after management told him that they were going to cut a bunch of his staff, and he told them to cut him instead.

This is . . . CHICAGOOOOOOOOOO~!

Here's wishing Don Geronimo was still on the air to interview King George after this latest news.

And THAT is how the broadcasting business IS today. Better get used to it. Legend or not...it doesn't matter to the CEO-types. Like him or not, George was one of a kind and certainly will never be forgotten by Philly radio fans. I would actually hope to see him do a weekend jock show somewhere just for jollies. He may not NEED the cash..(I don't know of his financial situation) but to just be dumped just before Xmas is not only cruel, but the norm these days. I'm told when I write stuff like this, it will come to bite me in the butt. Well...I don't give a dern. I just can't believe that it has all come to this in our so-called business. Just push the guy in his late 60's out to pasture...thanks for all your years...and oh...by the way...you can't even say goodbye to your loyal viewers/listeners for upteen years. Nice. Have a happy New Year.
BE BIG George

I wish I could say any of this surprises me, but as Mr. Sorensen has aptly pointed out, this is now the norm for our beloved business (not that it was ever a bed of roses, mind you). Still, I see hopeful signs on the horizon: there remains a vast market for audio-oriented entertainment. The fact that the suits have screwed up terrestrial radio so thoroughly will, in the long run, only make the public all the more hungry for quality programming. And god knows, there are plenty of available radio people out there, chomping at the bit to get back into the fray and do what they do best.

The bottom line is this: all it will take is a handful of talented, courageous visionaries to seize the opportunity and make things happen. It may not be via terrestrial radio, but it will be something. It may not happen tomorrow, but it will happen. And when it does, I for one plan to be ready... ;D
