KING hires new weeknight Meteorologist

http://www.adweek.com/tvspy/austin-meteorologist-moving-to-seattle/185085

No word on if he will do all weeknight newscasts or if he will split duties with Jim Guy.

I'm guessing that they will split the newscasts -- similar to what they have done with Mark Wright and David Espinosa-Hall. Perhaps Jim Guy will take the early shifts and the new guy will take the later shifts. Or it could be more along the lines of the Amanda Grace/Lori Matsukawa split with Jim Guy doing the 5/6:30/11 and the new guy doing the 4, 7, 9, and 10. TEGNA is really disrupting things at KING. I know TEGNA management is trying to save money, but they are getting rid of alot of people. They could have kept more of the NWCN people -- well-known in the market, but not making as much money (NWCN was notorious for lower pay). Angela King and Keisha Burns come to mind here, among others. SIGH...

KING-TV seems to be going younger with recent hires. Can't complain about that approach, afterall Jean Enerson, Jeff Renner, and other strong KING personalities started young at KING as well.
The new weather guy worked in Oregon before moving to Austin. I don't remember him on Portland TV, perhaps he was in Eugene or Medford?

Keisha Burns is still around, doing weekend evenings for now.

With the new guy - the question is who is out on evenings ... Jim Guy or Rhonda Lee. Rhonda was working only a handful of newscasts ... maybe she's meant to be weekend evenings with Keisha Burns back to weekend mornings...

But someone on this board mentioned that Keisha was leaving the area. Perhaps she has changed her mind or KING made an offer that she couldn't refuse (however unlikely that might be these days)?

Point taken. You are absolutely right about the age factor, though I don't like the motivation for doing it. If it just were to introduce fresh blood into a staid news organization, I might feel better. But it seems that it is primarily about money.

I don't see anything wrong with any of the new hires so far. In fact, I really like David Espinosa-Hall. Hopefully, the new weather guy will add to the KING 5 weather team as well. It's not like Seattle is an extremely serious weather market most of the year. The hardest part is getting through all the forecasts (marine, mountain, city, E. Washington, extended) in a few minutes.

Wait until they have co-anchor setup where one reads copy while other runs camera robotics, the switcher, answers the phone, and refills copy. Then they switch roles for the NEXT story.

Once they build a bigger set at KING, I predict the late night newsteam standing up all the time. TEGNA loves to have 5 or 6 people standing on the set talking to each other during the late news.

Here is another article on KING's new weather anchor: http://tvradio.blog.austin360.com/2017/01/26/jordan-steele-leaving-cbs-austin-for-seattle-gig/

This article notes that they want him to do more than just the weather. Hmm...

At KPNX in Phoenix, the evening weather anchor has essentially become a third anchor on the evening newscasts.

The weather anchor joining the anchor team is definitely a trend. Not sure who started it, but as you say it is in Phoenix, and it is being used by the NBC in Spokane. Basically, from what I have seen, the weather anchor is introduced for a weather tease in the first 1-2 minutes of the cast, then comes back for the "full" weather report at about :15-:17, then continues with lighter news with the news anchors. I would assume this is an effort to create more relatable on-air personalities and hope the audience latches on to this.

I see that in reverse here with KNDU sometimes. On many occasions I have seen the weekend sports anchor (Mark Mingura) fill-in for Monty Webb in the mornings. I don't know if he ended up getting meteorology credentials as well after graduating from journalism school, but I find it very weird that someone who talks high school sports on weekends, also does weather from time to time. But he does NOT do weekend weather. Instead they still rely on Ryan Overton from 125-mile away KHQ-6.

I still think the traditional two-anchor approach is the best way to go. One anchor does half of the stories, the other does the other half. KIMA still only has one anchor even though their competitors have two anchors in the early evening.

Actually, it is much more extreme in Phoenix. Typically, the chief meteorologist is standing with the two news anchors at the beginning of the newscast, introducing a serious news story (though she usually gets the third story of the top three). Unless there is severe or changing weather (rare in Phoenix), she is reading a pure news story. Then, she continues to do this throughout the newscast. Later, she does the weather (very short unless there is some type of severe weather).

It honestly looks like Extra or some other entertainment show with a lot of time spent on teases, moving camera shots, graphics, and telling us that "you will see this story on JUST ONE STATION" and/or "ONLY ON 12". Interestingly, they do one of the better story selections in the Phoenix market (by 10pm, I have already read most of the day's news online). And, in November, they were #1 in the demo, which says they are attracting younger viewers.

From DFW here is their take on Keisha and Maria moving from Seattle.

http://www.dfw.com/2017/02/13/1174074/keisha-burns-joins-nbc-5-weather.html

http://www.star-telegram.com/entertainment/tv/article131505659.html

Interestingly I counted five on-air weather staff for the KXAS, though one has traffic reporter duties. Keisha appears to be number 6. Then again DFW is the number 5 TV market.

And DFW is a frequent severe weather market, too! Specifically, at KXAS, they have the following assignments:

Johnston/Davies: Mornings and Midday (Davies does am traffic, too)
Finfrock (Chief Met): 5pm/6pm
Mitchell: 4pm/10pm
Burns/James -- Weekend mornings/evenings

But, since Davies covers am traffic and Finfrock is down to 2 newscasts (similar to Harold Taft 25 years ago), it is not unusual to have 6 meteorologist. Also, they have plenty of subs for vacations and illness.

Small world, with ex-KING/KIRO people at the same station over 1,600 miles away in North Texas. On the other hand, KCPQ's Lily Jang was at KHOU Houston until December of last year.

Even smaller world, Lily Jang worked at KHOU with former KOMO reporter Len Cannon, and former KSTW anchor Kevin Reece, (who moved to WFAA in Dallas last year).

What's up with all of these ex-Seattle people in Texas?! Will we see Tracy Vedder ex-KOMO going down there next? Or someone else from NWCN?
