KING-TV on Thursday night 11/5

Anyone know what happened to KING-TV on Thursday night? On DirecTV they were off, but still on Comcast. DirecTV was giving us KNBC from Los Angeles for a few hours, but KING's Comcast feed was unaffected, and all the other locals were fine on DirecTV.

Not that I'm a TV guy - but it sure seems like there was some problem with KING-TV's link to DirecTV and they put KNBC on as a filler until the problem was fixed.

KING 5.1 over the air Thursday at 8:00 was dead when I tried to watch a timer recording the next day. I had to watch the shows off Hulu instead. I thought maybe my DVD recorder screwed up again until I read this, so thanks.

Your welcome, and thanks for the info! I was wondering what was happening. It looks like DirecTV still gets their feeds over the air from Seattle, rather than directly from Master Control via fiber like Comcast & DISH. I gave away one of my DTV converter boxes, and have the other one in the closet, so I wasn't able to check if it was an over-the-air issue. It was nice to see Fritz Coleman again! Used to see KNBC all the time at my uncle's friends place when I was little in San Diego, thanks to them living up against a hill, that bounced the signals from LA down to them (but prevented them from getting most of the San Diego stations).

KING-TV's over the air transmitter failed due to a severe storm. This affected Broadstripe, DirecTV, and over-the-air viewers. Comcast apparently receives their signal another way (mentioned above).

That was pretty cool that DirecTV replaced KING so its viewers could still see NBC. I'm sure the network appreciated it.

We have Dish Network and it was off on it also.
It did not have any other feed though.
Just a text screen saying that there were
technical difficulties and it would be restored asap.

Oh ok... I thought DISH was getting direct feeds from here, but that might have changed after the DTV changeover. I know DirecTV gets everything off the top of the Columbia Tower. I noticed that DirecTV has some channels getting cut off at the sides of the screen (KCTS especially) to fill the whole 4:3 screen from a 16:9 feed. Is that happening on DISH also?

I don't know about Dish, but it happens on Comcast (especially on KING, KCTS) and it annoys me. :)

I wish they would just keep it letterboxed on the 4:3 feed. I can handle that. FOX news channel is now all 16:9 for HD, but it's still letterboxed, for us less fortunate viewers who don't have a 16:9 set. I wish DirecTV would utilize that 4:3 / 16:9 setting on their boxes, so we can have a choice to have things in 4:3 or 16:9.

KBTC's digital signal is currently running on Comcast analog/cable box channel 12. Right now that means lots of odd letter boxing - most of the pictures look like they have a perfect equally-sized black matte frame around them.

I happened to drive by KING-Tv x-mitter site last week and noticed some construction on the site. I think they redid part of the old tower (the small white one that was original KING-TV tower)...but not positive about that. Would be interested to hear what's up. Also seemed like xmitter bldg had been reworked but that may also just be imagination. All this based on a 2-second glimpse...

I didn't see anything in the FCC database, but they might have been working on the small white tower, which was home to their analog backup antenna, to convert it to digital operatons.
