KIOL and KFNC

What is their rankings as far as ratings. Arbitron, or any other ratings too.
How may I find out?

Thanks. But then why are their events always filled? Like the Half-Baked Beach Bash, and the Outlaw Dave Ranch Ride..... anyway.....
______________

Because the 12+ numbers are flawed. KIOL is billing quite well, as is KFNC. Both stations have a following, mostly of old KLOL rockers and residents of Beaumont that wanted an alternative to KIOC. The ratings for KIOL on radioandrecords.com is in the low 1's for Houston, while KFNC sits in the mid 0's. The new 12+ numbers are due out March 2, 2006, and can be found on the site I just mentioned. We are market number 7.
______________

Not sure what billing numbers you are looking at. The last time I saw their numbers KFNC was less than $100,000 for the month and KIOL was less than $300,000 for the month. That may be fine in Beaumont, but in Houston it way off.

$300k a month? Jeez, I've worked at stations that are barely in the Top 75 that bill better than that, and with a hell of a lot cheaper airstaff too!

Does all this mean these stations, despite their followings in terms of listener turnout at events and all, is still a station on its way out? I am one of those Listeners from Beaumont. I went to the Half Baked Beach Bash, drove to Houston to see Wendy Miller, at a car dealership, and always am calling and saying something positive to the airstaff. That is when I can get through.
I listen to Big Dog 106 KIOC also. I do that when I get the urge for the harder rock acts that everyone else seems to think KIOL should avoid. At least that is my opinion. Granted I am not in the target audience, but I do highly support the station and wish them well. I like the fact they are the only station on the dial that plays the new Rolling Stones stuff. In Houston that is. Maybe even in Beaumont. Big Dog sure the heck doesn't. Correct me if I am wrong. The station is still in its infancy. But it has lasted a year, and appears to be going strong. The advertising base needs to be broadened. Too many adult oriented advertisers. But that's business I guess. As far as FM News Channel, I tune in sometimes to hear Twilight Zone radio, and the Dream Doctor gets my attention at nights. Mostly late Sundays though, I listen to the Hard Show, but when Fletch irritates me, I tune in to Dr. McVee? (sp) The Dream Doctor.
I would say 97.5 the FM talker is like Rock 103.7; still young and cutting its teeth. And if it held on this long, may still have a chance.
That is just my opinion.
______________

Look... someone (however back-woods country the owners might be) has bought 'way' off into the FM talk thing here in Houston. As a business man positioned directly in downtown Houston, listening to radio 9 hrs a day, I like the young, the new, the underdog in any situation... and I've learned I like that even in radio. If I don't like it, I turn it... but I always turn back to hear what might be new. I admittedly am a station turner. I like news, talk, politics, issues of the day, local and syndicated chatter of all things that matter - local and nationally. KFNC offers that if you'll just listen for a while. Not to mention the added antics of ol' personalities and the comfortable feelings that familiar air-wave "friends" offer.

I'm 41 yrs old and as bright as the next listening pedestrian. But forgive me in saying, AM radio blows! On average, it just bores me to tears. Outside of certain syndicated programming, AM has no personality. SO very robotic and mundane. Just plain & dry.

I personally don't give a damn what anyone listens to, watches, smokes, or whatever. I only joined this group to add a cross-section of a genuine "radio fanatic", in contrast to watching TV. All stations are important in the big picture in most markets. If they become unimportant, listeners - via 'numbers' will ultimately make them go away.

I appreciate all - that all of you do. You make my sleepy, repetitious job tolerable every single day while I listen.

thank you all!

PS: History proves that competition has always kept quality high. Monopolies have always kept all things one sided, stale and restricted.

KIOL and KFNC are doing horribly in Houston.

As it has been mentioned ad nauseum on this board, the signal flat out blows. That's about 60 percent of their problem right there...

The areas where KIOL gets a great signal are in Livingston and parts of East Texas and East Texas is most definitely not Houston! They are called "Houston's Rock Station."

KIOL has been a let down since it went on the air. It took them months upon months to build up any airstaff. Too much ****ing Golden Earing. KIOL ended up filling the void few people wanted.
The people that felt there was a hole in Houston's rock radio wanted active-leaning radio, not AOR!!!!!
AOR has been declining nationally and the stations like WMMR in Philly that are doing well don't play that much classic rock. They lean active.
The days of Rolling Stones/Metallica/AC/DC/Fleetwood Mac radio are over. Fant should have woken up a long time ago and realized it.

If you listen to W&J in the mornings, they rarely have commercials because they can't sell any ad time.

I've wanted both stations to do well, but it just ain't happening.

Houston wanted a more active sounding rocker and The Buzz jumped on the wagon. They are all the more richer for it. Their move to daypart mostly 90's and early 00's rock has paid off well and has given most "rock" listeners no reason to have to switch to 103.7.

The outlook for these frequencies is wholly grim, but not because of the formats on them. That's a whole other nightmare.
The signal sucks and no matter what you put on either of these fequencies, the ratings and revenue will be absolutely lousy.

More people listen to it in BPT than KIOC from what I have seen...
and it gets into Lake Charles pretty well (in autos anyway..)...
so it is competing against 106.1 and 101.3 (which is a Cumulus station also)
Ahhh the life of Rimshots...

As much as I like to listen to 103.7 when out driving, I have to agree...
Making it a classic rock station and blowing off the "Houston" image may help a little...but then how many commercials could they sell in BPT area...or the rice fields of Winnie?

> If you listen to W&J in the mornings, they rarely have

I have noticed WJ hinting at XM or not being on 103.7 from time to time..
they are getting somewhat lame anyway and I have read similar complaints about their show on the Louisiana board....if they are not selling spots on their "flagship" station, and they constantly complain on the air about things not working, etc, I wonder HOW long they will be on the air??? WJ's spotbreaks are more and more parody songs or parody commercials...hmmmm

> I've wanted both stations to do well, but it just ain't

I feel the same way......I dont listen to 97.5 that much....the talk on there is not interesting (I am not into talk radio anyway)...and the news just doesnt cut it for me....

True....unless they can do something of a niche that noone else has done that would appeal to listeners in their city grade area...BUT the affluent areas of Houston are SW and NW...NOT east side....the limited number of listeners in their format range is not enough to cut it....personally I could see a JACK format on one of them....heck 98.5 did better with the jamming olides format than KIOL is doing now...IIRC they pulled a good 3+ share on 98.5 (which Liberman has yet to equal too)...

The Beach Bash was filled? What Beach Bash were you at?
