KIOL:Weak signal

There has to be an explaination of what has transpired with this signal. As I was driving to work last night from 610 and 290 all the way over to 59 and Kirby, the signal was mono in my car around 8:00 pm. The same thing happened on my way home.
From what I could tell, there was no tropo going on. When I would get down the freeway on 290 towards the beltway, the stereo signal would start going in an out with the mono, so it had nothing to do with the transmitter.

When they were testing, this signal was blowtorching all over Houston clearly, and now it's all over the place. In my opinion, after roughly 2 weeks of being on the air, they are not tweaking the equipment anymore.

So, who wants to supply the answer to this question.......

What the hell happened?
answer:_____________________________________________________________________

(and don't answer: RIMSHOT )

I had gave my theory awhile back and no one wanted to address it, so now I'm beginning to think I was right, or I was hallucinating on LSD.

Shortwave actually there was some tropo going on last night. KOUL was coming in if I had the antenna one way or KIOL if the antenna was another direction. That is not a luxury you have in a vehicle when you are driving. I also noticed today most of this morning that I had static with KIOL's signal, but could not get any other station that was interfering with KIOL.

I never personally addressed your theory when the Engineers were at the site testing. I didn't see where it would be to their advantage to send more power than is legally allowed, even when testing, their license is worth too much to them to lose it for purposely sending more than the legal limit.

I have noticed that the signal can be strong and suddenly drop in strength significantly. This is at home, so I am definitely not moving. I don't know if there is anyone still on site testing or not, but I will send an email to my contact tonight. Even a {BLEEP} station would not have the signal take a dive in strength like that and stay that way and then power back up to normal strength.

Cumulus does have it's own Engineers that go around the country and take care of new installations and upgrades. I doubt that there is any on site Engineer or Technician at any station. Cumulus may have a dedicated person for a city where they have five or more stations.

I'll admit the signal has not been all that great the last week. I would really hate to think that Cumulus was running overboard when testing to fool the people that listen to KIOL that it would not have the signal of a {BLEEP} station.

Driving I have noticed for the last couple of weeks an aweful lot of weak areas and then the signal is extremely strong. I don't quite know what to make of that, I have never had that experience with the other {BLEEP} stations to the degree that I have with KIOL lately. All the {BLEEP} stations have heavy fade areas, except KTHT 97.1 Country Legends. Even with the Missouri City stick stations in the West Loop Frwy area and especially downtown I get places where I pretty much lose the signal, but if I can roll forward or backward a few feet, usually the signal is back again.

I will send off the email and see if I get an answer and then post it to the board.

Later,
Mike O

Thanks Mike....

All I wanted was a {BLEEPING} answer. Now I know I'm not {BLEEPING} crazy.
I guess Cumulus didn't get their full wish of FM {BLEEPING MAGIC} and neither did anyone else.

Rimshots...gotta love em!

They sounded like (BLEEPING, BLEEP) again tonight. I had a hard time picking them up in Copperfield and I-10/Kirkwood area. I didn't hear any bleeding on their signal, but I heard a lot of static, almost like they were not operating at full power. <P ID="signature">______________

No Shortwave you are not crazy. I still don't know what is up with KIOL, snoman I've wondered the same thing about the power. I'll be listening and the signal drops substantially, which would take a big power cut. I don't know if anyone is out at the transmitter site still working on the equipment or not. KIOL could have a problem and there are a bunch of guesses, but something is causing the transmitter to kick into a low power mode. The new transmitters today, and I am assuming that KIOL is using a new transmitter, aren't nearly as sensitive to heat as the older ones, although they still need to keep the room cool enough. Could be a problem between the transmitter and the antenna. Hard to guess without being there and seeing what is happening. Then maybe SW was right and when they were testing before signing on for good, the station was running overboard on the signal, although I can't see the person I emailed with allowing that to happen unless it was do it or it's your job scenario.
