KIRO-FM Retooling Mornings

Buh-bye Curley.
Linda & Dave Ross to hold morning news block.
Ross & Burbank transition to talk then Burbank flies solo until whatzername comes on at noon.

from management
"Thank you for the email. John Curley is no longer hosting Seattle's Morning News. He's still in the KIRO Radio family and we're working with him to find the best possible platform for his talent. The change was made, because KIRO Radio has been hearing from a LOT of you that you want straight-forward news, traffic and weather first thing in the morning - saving the talk shows for later in the day. We heard that message loud and clear. So, effective today we've made some adjustments to our line up and we're doubling up on news in the morning with more news each hour delivered by two of the most respected news voices in the Northwest; Dave Ross and Linda Thomas."

The ratings must have really tanked with Curley for KIRO to put Dave Ross in a news anchor position. When's the last time he anchored, twenty five years ago?

Do they have a sports guy in the mornings? Who is even working at KIRO as a reporter these days?

I saw that Ursula Reutin (who I like) moves back to midday news anchor. Is she still news director? What happens to Maura Gallucci and Val Stouffer?

I sure hope that when Management came groveling back to Thomas after demoting her last year that she demanded a lot more money and maybe a private parking space to go back to mornings. As for Maura and Val, I don't think Bonneville has any room for a new FT employee.

Dave isn't "anchoring" in terms of reading stories, he's more the lead...Linda does the "news" and Dave is a bit of an air traffic controller, tossing to the different service elements and doing more in depth/analytics on top stories, much as he does when with Luke, albeit now interacting with Linda, Tom Tangey and at least the first two mornings, news maker type interviews. It's much cleaner and newsier than with Curley. It sounds more like "KIRO" which I'm guessing is what the negative listener feedback about John encompassed. Dave & Linda seem to be a good fit together at first blush. Where KIRO jams Curley into the schedule will be interesting. "Luke & Curley"?? "Dori & Curley"?? "Ron, Don & Curley"?? One thing I'm betting: Curley won't go back to nights.

It's must be important to listeners, we've generated more page views and opinions than anything else in Seattle radio on BW. Even stations flipping formats to sports did nothing for the amount of hits we've got. Is it because Dave Ross even in his twilight years or redacted status at KIRO is still considered an icon or is it people hate what as happened to a once heritage AM by taking it to FM and now shuffling chairs that makes people vent to the extent they have? I can't get traction on progressive talk but mention KIRO and it's a big deal.

From the way it's been going, I'd say look forward next to Larry, Moe and Curley on KIRO-FM.

There are a lot of little changes they've been making, and making again, over the past year, and I think they've overdone it. I no longer know when they're doing traffic reports (is it still "on the 7s", but only before 9am??) Moving the local news to a few minutes before CBS on the hour made me tune in, because that's when the other talk stations are in commercials or program breaks, and it made me stick around. I liked no commercials from the local news at :57 thru the first half of CBS and right into Ross and Burbank at :03. Now I hear three minutes of commercials at :57, , and the local news portion airs when KOMO is doing their bit right after the hourly ABC "newscast."
By changing KIRO around so much, I can't rely on them as I have in the past anymore, because I don't want to sit thru a lot of commercials to hope what I'm tuning in for will be there, when it isn't.
Adding short news summaries on the quarter hour is an interesting move - much as I've heard on KGO San Francisco and KPCC Los Angeles. That change, I think, could be good for raising their cume, among listeners who want an update on information, not just a lot of promo teases. But please settle in on something. And maybe they should look at bringing Bill Radke back in the mornings, and not messing with Ross and Burbank.

Shocked no one has thought of this. Back the Brinks truck up to Bill Yend's house along with membership to Seattle golf club. (the Highlands)
Problem solved!

And no more of those darned UHF TV station cameras zooming in on Bill Yeend's scalp every morning.....Or anymore Swan Lake moves around the Seattle Ballet choreographed News Out Of The Box set. If KIRO can guarantee just these two things to him (along with the Brinks Truck and golf course membership) the rest should come easy.

One can hope.....
