KIRO on Breaking News

A week ago, KIRO broke into the Seahawks game to do extensive coverage of the Tacoma Mall shooting. While KIRO had live interviews and live reporters on the scene and nearly continuous updates, KOMO was sticking with their news wheel and doing sports reports and business reports and traffic and weather (even though it was Sunday and there was no traffic).

Last night, the monorail accident happened Again, KIRO was all over the story with Frank Shires and Lan Archer doing continuous coverage and TWO reporters on the scene and lots of interviews with people who were actually on the monorail.
Meanwhile, KOMO kept doing business reports (it's Saturday night, who cares about last weeks closing stock numbers) and sports updates and weather.

Is it just me, or does KOMO not want to really do news. Every time theres a big local story I naturally switch to the so-called all news station. Then I quickly realize, if I really want the news I better turn on KIRO.

VERY good points and observations.

This seems akin to thr TV cable news race, with CNN stinking in regular day-to-day viewing, but everyone seems to flock there when there's a big story unfolding.

This sounds like the same thing happening with KIRO vs. KOMO.

Here's where experience shows. KIRO is a machine and everyone there knows what to do when a big story breaks.

KOMO can say all they want in their promos, but there are only a few people on staff (I'm talking 2 or 3) who have a clue what to do when something big happens. And those two or three people all used to be at KIRO, and apparently none of them were working when the Monorail accident happened.

That may be the case on the radio side but isn't there a big ol' TV news department just a few feet away? You mean to tell me that TV went to cover it but radio didn't have a clue? Incredible!
