KIRO Sports Launch

Press release says launch Monday of the Sports on 710 ... simulcast to breakaway on Thursday. Not sure what happens between 4/2 and 4/6 on KIRO-AM, though.

There are exhibition games scheduled on those days. Have the exhibitions been on the simulcast? I would run those on the AM interspersed with highlights from past seasons like Griffey's homer in '95. Kind of a pre-launch, launch as it were.

Good idea for a pre launch.

It'll be just the Cactus League PXP and stunting until 4/6. Maybe they should bring back "Mariners After Midnight" for the few remaining overnight Boeing workers...:)

Don't really "get" the KIRO stunting thing. They've been hammering the switch for months now. So what's the point? Why blow-off all your cume in one fell swoop.

Why not just keep up simulcast till Monday? Or maybe do a "Best Of" Seahawks and Mariners play-by-play, drag out some old Bob Blackburn of Sonics winning championship, anything!

But non-stop promos, just a waste of a great 50KW signal.

Actually in my humble view an excellent strategy. Listeners are not as plugged in as radio people think. Some might tune in Monday and think KIRO is just gone. By running non-stop promos for a number of days anyone that tunes in is clearly directed where to go. This is the best way to preserve your audience and get them pre-setting the FM dial. The only problem in this format flip parameter is there will still be a number of people who wake up Monday and will wonder why their news station is now sports. They will go to their secondary station on the AM or FM dial. I remember in Boston a station was off the air for a month and still got solid numbers. PPM should correct this parameter for ratings, but it does prove people don't listen as closely as we all think they should.

I do suspect KOMO-AM. KTTH and KVI will see significant growth as people are perplexed. Over time that may erode. KIRO-FM is banking it will.

Yeah, there is non-stop promos on 710.

But, a variety of announcers talk about the switch, including Steve Raible (KIRO-TV anchor), Mike and Mike (ESPN Radio host), Dave Niehaus (voice of the Mariners), Luke from TBTL, Dave Ross, and Ron and Don, just to say a few.

Have you guys picked up the 24/7 promos of KIRO anywhere else than the Seattle area? If so, list location, please.

Does Olympia count? :)

Seriously - what do you mean by that? The online stream for the station isn't (officially) up yet...

I think the thought was sky wave reception.

I actually have seen similar stunting in several markets. Phoenix did the same with KTAR before the switch and it worked pretty well.
Guess time will tell if this was the right move. Still question blowing up the 710 news format and jury is out if all will migrate to the FM.

A work in progress?

Shouldn't be. They had since last August to get this pig working.......

I just read that John Clayton's Saturday show is making the jump over to 710 - not surprising since he's already employed by ESPN. Still a big blow to KJR, probably more for his weekly appearances on Softy and Groz/Gas which presumably will also come to a halt.

Overalll, I'm not that impressed with the new 710. Colin Cowherd sounds like your typical over-caffeinated syndicated sports talker, Brock Huard sounds limp and I've barely heard any Calabro since the M's games have been starting early.

Brock Huard is even the good Huard brother. Damon at least is more accomplished. Furthermore, it's just a lame attempt of another sports station figuring they can throw any jock on the air.

Its going to be really fun to see the PPM numbers from the sports stations in Seattle! :D Im kinda Excited!

Obviously KJR-AM and KIRO-AM (Crazy how they both have FM counterparts huh?) are going to be the big "Contenders", but even KRKO and KHHO should draw a few numbers.
I guess we'll find out real quick if Seattle-Tacoma is a "Sports Market"

KHHO is a basic simlcast of KJR daytime and KRKO, KJR, and KHHO with all with the FOX bird for the overnights. The breakdown will be fun.
