KIRO Traffic Sounds Effect | Music

This maybe a stupid post, but I had KIRO on all day and they have a new sound effect when going into traffic. What does it sound like? STATIC!

The first time I heard it this morning, when it started even the anchor said 'what is that?' Then he said 'that must be our new traffic sound.

It is an odd sound in my option.

I think it sounds awful. Just a lot of noise that is not complementary to having a voice over it.

I say - if they want new music, use the old Getaway Traffic music bed. That was pretty awesome.

LOL!

When your traffic bed is so bad, your announcers don't even know what to make of it, it's time to try something else.

I always thought Triple J Radio in Australia had the COOLEST news opener music ever. Here, check it out:

http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/news/news.asx (Windows)

http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/news/news.ram (Real)

If I were programming KIRO, this is what you'd hear right after CBS News....

In fact, bookmark this whole page:

http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/listen/default.htm

LOADS of cool on-demand alternative audio clips, even free MP3 downloads of cool Aussie indie bands. ANY song with a title like "you! toilet! wall! me! marriage!" Yidcore is a MUST download....

The OLD KOMO Traffic Bed (80's-90's)

We're still looking for the old KOMO-AM traffic bed
that had the "W (double-u) -L -S" flavor to it...

It had a 'MOOG-TYPE' jolting start, then those 5 musical belltones
that sparkled thruout the bed....

Anyone HAVE even an aircheck copy of this?

Thanks!

Re: The OLD KOMO Traffic Bed (80's-90's)

The KOMO radio traffic bed changed in March of 1990. Not sure which one you are referring to.

Prior to that it was a synth with a lot of sawtooth in it. This was used to introduce Ted Potter traffic reports.

After March, 1990, a new traffic sounder was used which came with the jingle package KOMO purchased. That JAM jingle pacakge was "Spirit Of New England" named after WBZ which commisioned it.

It was re-sung with the slogan "The station you depend on". That's probably the one you are referring to.

It was the only instrumental piece on the reels, and, I as recall, I spent weeks trying to make that new, thin synth sound as good as the old traffic sounder. I EQ'd it, slowed it, compressed it, made it faster, etc.

Nothing worked, so I left it as it was. I always though it was inferior to the sounder that preceeded it.

Not a stupid post, but an incredibly stupid traffic sounder!

WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?

I'm imagining KIRO managers and manager wannabes had a long, closed door meeting over what to do about the ratings Clendening and Company tanked. After hours of discussion and no solutions, someone raised his hand and said, "Duh, I bet we wouldn't suck if we changed the traffic sound." All in favor?

The traffic sounder is the least of KIRO's problems. Actually, if the anchor/host lets is run its full length before intrpducing the traffic person, it's pretty effective--it's change! Sure beats the heck out of MR DOOMSDAY--KIRO's previous liner guy; "710 KIRO REAL TIME TRAFFIC"---scared the heck out of the listener like, you know, I5, I405, 167 and both bridges were all closed.
