KIRO-TV and Bob Jordan

I realize that there have been other threads on this, but other than some personel changes, KIRO-TV still has the same tired look.

I thought by now he would have re-invented the look of the channel. Perhaps they are planning changes that will take more time. Or perhaps, there is no budget for such changes. Only a real insider would know, and that is not me.

I will continue my prediction of major set/graphic changes, but pushed back now to May. IMO, you don't hire a Bob Jordan and keep the same look for too long. Seattle is falling behind with graphics and sets. Seattle should be a leader here, and I still believe Jordan will bring this on. Then watch KING follow.

I'm surprised that Raible and Russel are still anchoring the evening news together, that Sam Argier hasn't been named "chief" meteorologist (is Jordan still giving him a tryout?), there still isn't a weeknight sports anchor, and there isn't a male co-anchor on weekends.

Of course, Jordan pretty much blew up the morning and noon news. Maybe he's taking it one step at a time.

Meanwhile, I suspect KING is gearing up for a "new look" KIRO. I watch the 11PM news with Bounds and Matsukawa regularly (I'm not home for the Enerson newscasts so I don't know what they are doing there) and within the last three weeks there has been a lot of new imaging and camera shots on the set.

KING is truly doing some "out of the box" and CNN Headline News (2002-2005 set) shots with single anchors standing next to big plasmas and cutting to another anchor on the other of the set standing next to a different plasma. There are lots of odd angle shots with cameras, etc in the background. I think its kind of fun and really makes a very old set seem new.

One of the newest shots is a close in of one anchor (usually Bounds) next to a big flat screen (hanging from the ceiling) on the "weather" side of the set. Bounds' backdrop is a bunch of First Alert Weather logos and a flat screen with the Live Doppler displayed. This backdrop has been very rarely seen as it is for close in shots of the weatherman when he is on the main KING set sitting at the desk. The problem is, for most of the life of this set the KING weather team is almost always seen off set in the "weather center" or on the "weather terrace" and not with the main anchors on the main set.

They've even changed the open with a new "Next at 11" open with one anchor teasing upcoming stories (while standing, somewhere) and then quickly cutting to the co-anchor (standing somewhere else) to introduce the top story.

Meanwhile, over at KIRO they're still stumbling along with the same old, same old...

You can't switch things on television at the flick of a switch, folks. You don't go to the App Store to pick out a new graphics set, you can't just pick out a new lead anchor from Google Play. A completely new strategy doesn't come the same a way as does a Flash update.

As much as people here hate talking about it, there are sales implications here too. Not to mention talent considerations and contracts.

Freak has it right, maybe the budget isn't there. But then again, maybe Jordan's answers are in the building right now. Aside from already announced dismissals, maybe some changes have already been done that nobody here notices (adjustments to Seattle radio stations happen a lot, but are seldom mentioned here).

TV (and radio) changes are not all about the most tangible things like graphics and talent.

You are right AQH, the biggest change I've noticed about Seattle radio that there hasn't been any mention of here is the change in Star's morning show schedule. As I was getting ready for school on Wednesday I noticed that they had basically shoved everything to the two breaks at the top and bottom of the hour and completely eliminated the breaks on the quarter hours. It sounds a lot more rushed to me now.

Former traffic reporter Jenni Hogan pops up on King as a reporter this week. It hasn't been 6 months so she must not have had a non contract?

It is important to note that there have been a lot of changes behind the scenes at KING, too. A number of people, including Costello, have been shown. That is probably leading to the new shots, anchors standing by the screen, etc. at KING.

No idea why Bob Jordan is not hiring a new traffic reporter in the mornings on KIRO-TV? I have to look at the new Brian Monahan weather guy, and Michelle and John try to do the traffic - why isn't there a reporter around?

Bob Jordan was brought in to win. We wil see more changes eventually. There is no doubt.

I suggested in the previous thread re: KIRO that they at the very least, on an interim basis, subcontract with Metro Traffic to provide a live traffic report (voice only) that could narrate the live traffic camera images. Bill Ogden did this on KING on the weekend morning news for years. That would be an improvement over the current situation...

I read this past week on tvjobs.com that Sam Argier had been named "Chief Meteorologis" at KIRO. Is he not recognized as such on-air?

The KING change-up is interesting. Panning back to show all the wires, plugs, cables, cardboard and plywood sets is likely designed to keep the viewers eyes on the screen rather than nodding off onto a distant sat channel. Full body shots are a bit of eye candy but otherwise I'm not sure what it adds to ratings and the overall wowiekazowie. Sort of like web cams in the radio C.R. I can only watch Bob Rivers itch and scratch himself for so long..

He's not acknowledged at being chief on the webpage.

But then again Steve Raible's biography says that Rebecca Stevenson is still chief meteorologist at KIRO.

Effective Monday, Sam Argier is now referred to as Chief Meteorologist. He acknowledged it in a twitter post yesterday.

OK, it is obvious that KIRO has not changed anything for the May sweeps, I still believe there will be big changes to KIRO's presentation at some point. The next check point will be September 2013. So we will see, please insiders comment if you can do so incognito.

Looks like some of the news music has changed. Listen during the beginning of the 5:30 and 6PM newscasts. It's not the same "CBS Enforcer" music anymore for the news open.

Does anyone think KOMO will get wise and put the problem solver reports at 5 or 6? It's really annoying that they put all the promotional content at 11. KIRO meanwhile has been promoting investigative reports on radio stations on an almost daily basis for the last week, and they're all at 5. Actually, there haven't been many this week, but last week there was quite a lot last week.

The voiceovers have also changed... I can't believe he's still sticking with Russell & Raible in primetime. Ugh.

Well, you just can't change main anchors at the drop of the hat. It's not like they have a ton of people to fill in on a temporary basis.

Yeah, the news theme is no longer CBS enforcer, which I kinda liked. However, it is being used by almost everybody with a CBS affiliation, perhaps they wanted to go against the grain. I also notice a slight modification in the news desk, but the rest of the set looks the same.

As for the anchors, there was a time when Angela was stumbling quite a bit, she seems to have improved. Steve will always be Steve, the former Seahawk player and current radio announcer. Oh well. But formeraa is correct, you can't just clean house without ramifications, especially if your ratings have been decent in recent years.
