KIRO's NEW PD

From www.allaccess.com

4-13-07

BONNEVILLE finds its PD for newly-acquired Talk KIRO-A and KTTH-A/SEATTLE from within naming...ROD ARQUETTE to the post.[EDIT]

Not sure why this post was edited. There are some big changes round here in the Seattle Market. My sources at Eastlake tell me the new PD is not in house, but Rod Arquette a VP of the Salt Lake group.. Guy is the real deal is the word from Eastlake. Also big changes afoot, as I predicted at KBSG. Before flipping to a simulcast they are changing up the format to a 70's station with some 80's and a couple of 60's classics. No need to take my word for it, listen. Finally, big gossip over on Dexter at Infinity. A major long time Seattle morning team was in negotiations this week in the building with the big honchos. My question is what station would want this well-known team??? Gut feeling is KMPS or KBKS. KBKS is dead in the water in mornings and KMPS needs a shot in the arm if they are going to knock out the WOLF. Don't want to name the show, but let's just say they are "stars" and leave it at that. Who has a contract up at Infinity soon?

Weren't you the person spreading the misinformation that Bonneville was buying Fisher? Sounds like you are trying to stir things up at CBS too.

You have zero credibility, and people should remember that.

Gotta love the gossip...but back to the original thread. The Bonneville SLC transplant has his work cut out for him. Don't know much about him, but he comes from the Mormon-themed KSL. Could this create a more "conservative" KIRO? Just something to ponder...

Anything on this board is suspect, but Take It From Me got something right. A media release late this afternoon confirms the new PD at KIRO and KBSG does indeed sound different. Not sure whether I like it or not.

As for the long time STAR morning show seen over at Infinity, guess we'll have to wait and see on that. Visiting a radio station is not the same as moving to a radio station. Why do people in radio always assume someone is about to be fired?

Maybe JACK FM is about to get a new morning show. Seems more likely than KMPS getting rid of a morning show that finished the last trend number one in just about every demo. KBKS might be looking, but how about this: maybe they just stopped by to say hi. Sales people do that all the time. Do you all hate each other?

The new KIRO PD makes sense. His conservative KSL background will suit KTTH and KSL's strong news product makes sense for KIRO. Do you think KIRO will go back to a more news approach, or stick with the current talk emphasis after mornings. I noticed Ron and Don were number four in the market and the strongest shift on the station for the last three trends. Hey, maybe the morning show that made the rounds at Infinity will end up on KIRO. (Just kidding) This board never fails to give me a good laugh.

Take It From Me...Posts like this get edited because they clearly originate from copyprotected sources. The author didn't bother to paraphrase the All Access citation and lifted the entire thing verbatim. Radio-Info respects the copyright holders of such works. As a result of the improper citation of the quote, we took appropriate action. This is clearly outlined in our terms of service.

It's completely acceptable to quote from protected sources. What everyone needs to realize is that the smaller the size of the original material, the smaller your quote has to be as a result. This is a widely accepted academic and journalistic standard. The All Access story was small and therefore any quote from it had to reflect that reality.

I recommend that users paraphrase citations (especially small ones) and then simply attribute where the information came from e.g. including a URL.

If there's ever any question about proper citation and attribution, then don't hesitate to contact me directly. You can even post your query on the Ask Radio-Info board.

Thanks for participating on the site.

Mormon themed KSL?
I've listened to them for years and am hard pressed to notice any Mormon slant on their product. Certainly KSL's COL has a high concentration of Mormons in their audience and major matters of concern to the Mormon church make the news there. But that's like saying KIRO has a "Boeing themed" presentation.
Bonneville also runs an all-news operation in Washington DC (I once worked that market) and have never detected any real "Mormon slant" to their local coverage.
And No, I'm not Mormon (a good Catholic boy here!)

No, you are correct, my use of Mormon-themed was wrong. Mormon-owned would be more appropriate. KSL Radio & TV do not "wear it on their sleeve", but do tend to stay away from a lot of subjects and topics that most mainstream media cover. But the question still begs to be asked, will this make KIRO more conservative?

Ahh yes, that is the $64-thousand dollar question.

They'd be fools to march into town with that agenda. I just can't imagine they would toss the likes of Ron Reagan and Dave Ross over to poor step sister KTTH. But certainly more foolish things than that have been done in this market!

Okay, I know the thread is old- but I'm down here in the Valley of the Sun where it's 98 degrees @ 11:30 at night and I'm thinking it's time to head back to Rain City. Heard that KIRO got rid of Ken Berry last year and that Bonneville later re-acquired KIRO. Wondered who the new PD was and how he/she is doing.

So- how IS he doing?

Worked for Bonneville once upon a time and never experienced any hint of LDS interference. Doesn't mean it never happens, but I never heard a single first-hand account of Mormon management pushing an agenda off on news or programming staff.

Any news or inside gossip about what's going on would be appreciated.

Just sign me Parched in the Desert-

Rod Arquette came to Seattle (from SLC) to replace Tom Clendenning shortly after Bonneville took over. I know the crew there is MUCH happier than the Entercom days (Ironically the sign on building was painted black and I had visions of their staff up on a ladder with spray cans about 3 seconds after sale was finalized!)

So far, though, other than staff changes (and some ramping up) there hasn't been anything significantly different in the product on any of the three stations.

Probably very easy to give Rod a call [EDIT] and discuss your situation. We'd love to have someone back in town who knows the climate before showing up and not likely to complain about it!!!! Save THAT for the rest of us who are already here.....

Good luck!

Sorry...The phone number I had posted was their main switchboard number; but apparently that's a policy violation. web site is seven ten (numbers) kiro dot com and has the phone# on it.

If you're wanting to exchange telephone numbers or other sensitive information, a good compromise is to use the site's PM system. It's a great way to share personal information without having the rest of the user base see it. Just go to "MY MESSAGES" towards the top of the screen.

Thankyou, lbb:)
Did some googling on Arquette and I really like what I read about him. J school, strong news background and, how shall I put this? He appears to be a bonafide grownup.

It would be just so unbelievably cool to wind up back in my hometown.

Arquette's first major move seems to be a good one...Glenn Beck to KTTH. Excellent show, a nice combination of humor and politics!

Now, how about an investigation of what happened to Mike Webb? This story should be covered despite the fact that Mike was not Mormon, and not conservative. My opinion of this cluster would skyrocket if they took a human approach, as opposed to a "he wasn't one of us" approach. Just some random listener thoughts...

First and foremost, it's the Seattle dailies and/or The Weekly that should be covering the Webb story. But Seattle newspapers have a terrible track record in covering the lives, misadventures and deaths of prominent citizens. With the exception of a few fabulous investigative reporters- Duff Wilson comes to mind- the P.I. and Times have been notoriously squeamish when it comes to reporting anything that everyone doesn't already know. Judge Little was molesting little boys for a decade and everyone that was anyone knew it. Sen Adams was helping himself to extra servings of hot tamales and everyone looked the other way- until he slipped up and drugged a girl who talked.

IMHO- It's really not radio's job to take the initiative in covering the Webb story- especially not the job of people who worked with him so closely. It's not because of his politics, religion (or lack thereof)or sexual orientation. This is just not the kind of story radio news breaks-

Now, if Dave or Dory wanted to devote a show or two to Mike......

Well, isn't news, news? Why should newsradio avoid coverage just because someone worked in the same industry? If anything, there may be even more interest within the same media segmentation.

Or the infamous story of how Norm Rice's wife shot him in the arm after finding him in a compromising position at home. (That's why Rice was wearing a sling during a photo-op when Bill Clinton came to town on a campaign swing) I've heard from numerous EMTs and Seattle Police that the story is true, but...everyone wants to look the other way.

Actually, CorpSuit, one Seattle talk host allowed a guest to repeat some of the Mayor Rice gossip on the air. The host himself himself said nothing that was actionable, but he was summarily fired and soundly condemned by all Seattle's Usual Suspects. Front page stuff.

While there are tough evidentiary standards for proving libel of a public figure, this is one that Rice could have won had he gone to court. Manangement knew it.

Should be a lesson to all of us-

Well- gotta go round up the herd now. Happy trails.
