KISS 101.7 WJKS Format Flip this Thursday?

This AM, before 6am, between songs there were clips being played that 101.7 is under construction, look for a new and exciting station. (something along those lines with the construction noises in the background) After 6am the usual morning AM show was on & commercials. Also it was announced that something new was happening this Thursday?

Anyone know anything?

I usually do not listen to this station, it is hard to get in my area, but this am the seek stopped on it and I like the song being played, which seemed out of their format. I though I was dxing another 101.7 at first.

Also, Does anyone have the history of this station? I remember as a kid hearing a KISS 101.7 down in southern Delaware for years. Then the same KISS 101.7 was on both the Southern and Northern 101.7 and then just on the current Northern 101.7 (Wilmington/Canton NJ)..............lost track of what is on the 101.7 in southern Delaware. (Big 101.7?)

101.7 used to be WNNN, with religion...before going to their current rap, hip hop, ghetto format. I'm surprised this station has survived as long as it has. As far as I know, their ratings aren't that great.

No, their ratings aren't great. 1510 is now carrying the former religious program

The station is udner construction, I doubt a format change is i nthe works.. but they're improving on things already there.

If I'm not mistaken, the owner of WJKS ("Tony Q") is the same owner who ran Kiss 101.7 in Southern Delaware.

I haven't spoken to him in awhile, but I believe your right. He and I have conversed online, and I know he ocassionally reads these boards.

What's all this talk about a "northern" and "southern" 101.7 in DE? From what I can tell, WJKS transmits from south Jersey and it's strongest coverage is in central DE - rimshotting into Wilmington from the south. There would not appear to be any space whatsoever for a second station on the same frequency. Could the "northern" and "southern" Kiss stations that are being referred to be the same station?

Also, I noticed on Radio Locator that there is an active CP for this station, which would extend the signal contours a little farther northward. And, I mean little - like 3 miles. But, it may be enough to give a little boost into their target of Wilmington.

Perhaps that's what the "construction" is about - (slightly) better signal along with fresh imaging, etc.

There is indeed two 101.7s covering Delware....101.7 WJKS is in Canton NJ which covers Northern to Central Delaware. (I can even pick them up many times in Northern Chester County Pa) The other 101.7 WZEB is in Ocean View Delware, down near the Maryland border. They are B 101.7 with a simulcast on 95.3 which is in Laurel Delaware.

But again, I remeber a time when both 101.7's were KISS 101.7 and claimed to cover all of Delware on both signals.

I have to admit, I just double checked and you're right. Looking at the contours and the amount of distance between the two signals they seem incredibly short-spaced, which is why I couldn't believe that there would be another 101.7 in Delaware. It just seems incredible.

So, Kiss 101.7's signal is weak to the north AND is chopped up by interference to the south. Basically, they come in well only in Dover and a few swampy farm communities in south Jersey...and that's it. No wonder they get lousy ratings - a typical crappy clock radio can't pick them up more than 10 miles from the tx!

That whole Ocean City-Salisbury market is a mess to begin with. 46 FM stations within 40 miles of Salisbury. I don't know how anyone makes money down there since 80% of the market is little class A's. They have like 5 country stations down there (WWFG, WICO/WXJN, WINX, WAAI, WBEY), 3 or 4 AC's, etc. You need a masters degree to remember who's simulcasting where (97.5&105.9, 103.5&107.5, 95.3&101.7).

Then the shortspacing with other stations, the 101.7 you mentioned, 92.1 in Vineland with 92.1 in Fenwick Island, 105.5 in Cape May CH with 105.5 in Salisbury. Mess!

Their website 1017wjks.com states the announcement is Thursday at 7:30AM and also says "the future of Kiss-FM is in your hands".

I will say maybe a tweak back to Urban Contemporary (I believe they've been skewing older as of late) with more listener input (perhaps a "listener advisory board"). 7:30Am seems a bit odd for a format flip and why would they put "the future of the station" in the hands of its listeners?

Sounds like they are just starting up a listener advisory board
