KISS 107

I haven't listened to them in a few years but before I moved they were more of a rhythmic CHR.

Good CHR..... not good CHR?

Thoughts?

Terrible CHR.

Incidentally they're not a mainstream CHR at all anymore.

Really? Not a mainstream CHR anymore? ::)

These are the most played song on CHR/Pop stations:
http://www.radioandrecords.com/Formats/Charts/CHR_Top40_Chart.asp

Now then, let's see what Kiss FM has been playing since 9 AM this morning:

9:03 Rihanna "Disturbia"
9:10 Jasaon Mraz "I'm Yours"
9:13 Ne-Yo "Miss Independent"
9:22 Kevin Rudolf "Let It Rock"
9:27 Beyonce "Single Ladies"
9:38 One Republic "Apologize"
9:43 Shontelle "T-Shirt"
9:46 Pink "So What"
9:50 T.I. & Rihanna "Live Your Life"
9:54 Saving Abel "Addicted"
10:00 Blaque "Bring It All To Me"
10:03 Katy Perry "Hot N Cold"
10:06 Britney "Womanizer"
10:10 50 Cent "Ayo Technology"
10:14 Jason Mraz "I'm Yours"
10:17 Notorious BIG "Hypnotize"
10:21 Lil Wayne "Mrs. Officer"
10:25 Sara Bareilles "Love Song"
10:29 T.I. "Whatever You Like"
10:32 Rihanna "Rehab"
10:41 Pras "Ghetto Superstar"
10:45 Kevin Rudolf "Let It Rock"
10:49 Kanye West "Love Lockdown"
10:56 Jesse Mccartney "Leavin"
10:59 Fergie "Big Girls Dont Cry"
11:04 TI & Rihanna "Live Your Life"
11:08 Beyonce "If I Were A Boy"
11:12 Three Days Grace "Never Too Late"
11:15 T-Pain "Can't Believe It"
11:24 Mariah Carey "We Belong Together"
11:27 Pink "So What"
11:36 Justin Timberlake "My Love"

Conclusion: Kiss FM is a CHR/Pop station. It's Rhythmic friendly, and in the morning hours will also play quite a few Recurrents.
Let us not forget that Cincy has another CHR in Q-102, which has more of an adult lean but will still play records like "Let It Rock" by Kevin Rudolf, T.I.'s "Live Your Life", and Kanye West's "Love Lockdown".

Neutral - not a good CHR - not the worst.
Still, it's standard CC "cookie-cutter" programming is very obvious and predictable.

Top 40 is predictable no matter who owns it. Having worked at Q102 and now Electric, I've learned one thing about Top 40/CHR radio. Play the hits.... ALOT!!!!!!!!!! lol :D

Yes, my friend - you are correct!
Playing "the hits" has been a proven formula in radio for like, forever.
However, the "personality" side has also been a critical success factor. That's why where you work in Charleston is a good example to keep the audience engaged locally. People can sense anything different and react accordingly.

Kiss 107 is a good station, Mark did a great job programming it. However, I think Q102 is much more "Cincinnati" and thats where and how they win. Q102 is embeded in the city, the events, the music and dominates with the "money" crowd. I personally like WKRQ better, but both are very good radio stations.

Yep.
It's all about the local "identity" - unless you are in NY/Chicago/LA - then it's a little more challenging since those major markets (metro areas) are huge.

I personally like Kiss 107's music, but their imaging is weak. But that's Cheap Channel for you. I think they play the right amount of recurrents/golds and good ones, not tired ones. They have improved greatly since the PD has left the building. I hope to see them improve anymore. They beat The Wiz and Q usually. Much better than Channel 945 in Dayton as a CHR as well.

Kiss 107- B+

Could add some custom intros, better imaging, and new music to get it to an A. :)

Even if they've started playing CHR music again, their repetitiveness makes them a real stinker.

CHR and Top 40 are repetitive formats.

Classic rock is just as repetitive with there 101 song playlist how many times can we suffer thru freebird and stairway to heaven and gimmee three steps at least with chr you get new music.Classic rock radio is bad

lovejamminoldies, please dont get me wrong, but i really think Mark did a great job with what he had in his toolbox. After Randy left Cincinnati, they have let that station just be another cookie cutter. Mark put meat on the bones and added revenue out the ying-yang.

However, WKRQ hands down is a much better sounding CHR with a much better curb appeal. It works great for the market, is consistantly Top 5 Billing and does great things for the community. Bonneville has a gold mine in their hands and they know it.

Billing typically goes -

WLW
WUBE
WRRM
WKRQ
WGRR

WKFS normally comes in around #8 or #10, but it was much worse before Mark showed up. So he did a lot for that station.

The report I have in my hands from MK says

WLW
WUBE
WRRM
WKRQ
WGRR
WKRC
WEBN
WIZF
WKFS
WOFX
WSWD
WYGY
WNNF
WMOJ
WFTK

Business-wise, maybe. But quality-wise, NO. When Mark entered, the station may have had better revenue, but the KISS FM I know was without Mark. Valentine In The Morning and ALL OF TODAY'S BEST MUSIC. We had custom intros. Jingles. Imaging. Jocks. CREATIVITY. Mark programmed it WEAK and that's where it is now. Repetitiveness is an issue considering they don't have very good song separation, but CC is usually weak at adding new music. Sorry, Mark was a bad move on my end. Without him, KISS would sound like a TRUE KISS.

I think their target market doesn't notice the creativity, etc one bit.

I think they just turn it on and listen. If you want Top 40 or whatnot, they're the assumed station to go for.

If you want a mix of 90s, 00s and Top 40, or if you're a woman over 30 trying to be hip, you go for Q102. I don't like Q102 because people like Brian Douglas and Laura Powell are too "wired" and "goodie" for me. Kinda gets annoying. Not criticizing the people, never met them, prolly good folk, but they just aren't for me.

If you want Urban, you listen to WIZ. They don't play as much "mainstream" rap as they used to, in my opinion, choosing to mix up more non-Top 40ish tracks, especially since Q came into the market with, as someone said, some TI and Rihanna and such.

Each of them have their niches. With iPods, its hard for Kiss to compete like they used to. Now, 13-25 year olds just plug their iPods in and listen to their playlists. I don't think satellite radio has broken much into their market, and I know HD hasn't grabbed any kind of hold.

I just like how they do the commercial free hour, so I can change it when it goes to 20 minutes of commercials.

I dunno, not proclaiming to be a radio expert, never worked in the field or anything. Just going by what I and the people I know say.

Fully agree with the fact that this particular demographic listens only for the music - when they don't have iPods with them..... ;D
