Kiss 108

I just moved here from Arizona and was psyched to check out the legendary Kiss 108. Everyone in radio knows the station and I actually had a chance to meet Steve Rivers a few years back at a party and we talked about his days there with Dale Dorman and Matt Segal. My question to all of you Boston Radio Lifers is, what happened? I have been here about 3 months and with the exception of Matty and the night jock Jackson, everyone else is sort of mediocre. Middays are ok I guess, but they're just un memorable. PM drive is frankly unlistenable. Does this Romeo kid think people are buying his "boyfriend," and "yo whatsup?" and his cheesy 80's delivery? I heard an interview he did recently and I couldn't believe I was listening to a legendary radio station! Not to mention there's a Romeo at Z-100! I guess I expected to come and be blown away by everyone. There's nothing like Kiss in Phoenix, but, I never expectd anything from Phoenix. Any opinions either way?

Ouch! Things change... people change... radio stations change.

If you're looking for some old-school Kiss 108 sound, check out my boy Uncle Dale on 103.3 doing mornings.

Bottom Line: Cost cutting by Clear Channel.

Up until a few years ago there was a good line up, (Matty, Ed McMann, Dale, Artie). KISS108 doesn't even have it's own PD. Caddilac Jack serves as both KISS and Jamin's PD. They recently cut long time production GOD Jeff Berlin who made KISS's imaging sizzle.

Uhhhhh You're giving him grief because there's a Romeo at Z100? do you know how many Cadillac Jack's, Booker's, B dub's, KId (whoever, insert name here), Shadow (whoever insert name here) there are in CHR radio? gimme a break bashing the guy's name, that's pointless!.

It amazes me how many people on this board dont have the 1st clue about how radio functions. First of all, the person making this original post is not in kiss 108s target demo. They dont care about you, nor are they trying to impress you. Kiss 108 targets mainly females and a certain age. They consistantly deliver the ratings time and time again in all dayparts for those demos. Mid days sound great and the dj relates great to the working audience. Romeo is syndicated around the country and is one of the more interactive entertaining jocks I have heard in a while. He understands who they are targeting and does a great job at attracting those listeners. The fact that their is a romeo at z100 is a reason for you to not like the station? Also, whoever said kiss 108 doesnt even have their own pd is wrong. Kiss 108 does have a full time pd who shares repsonsibilities with their sister station. All around the country most stations Do not have their own. They have regional pd's who run 3-6 stations. Radio has changed dramatically since steve rivers days, and your comparison is not even realistic in the least bit. Not every market can stand out like phoenix?!

Wow! Buddy take it easy! First off, I do have a clue as to how radio functions as I worked in Phoenix Rado. No need to take cheap shots at market size. I'm aware that it's not as big as Boston. Also, I DO KNOW radio has changed. I know many PD's have more than one station, I know budgets are bing cut, I know it's a very different industry than when I started back in the 80's.
But, back to my point, I understand the business and I assumed everyone on this board did too. I was really just giving professional criticism; i.e. listening as a radio profesional. Critically listening, I understand that Kiss 108 targets mostly females 18-34 and skews a bit older in the day and younger at night. I also understand that with the exception of Matty, and I suppose this is the case at most Top 40's, no one is tuning in to hear the jocks. It's pretty music driven and that's why they deliver the ratings. Not to mention, Cadillac Jack (who I did not mention in my original post) is a huge research/numbers guy. Perhaps a better point for me to have raised is the fact that I have been listening critically and I want to know what other critical listeners think. The midday personality seems extremly nice. She just doesn't stand out, but that's ok. I never said I didn't like the station because of a Romeo on Z-100. Maybe he picked his name/maybe he didn't... you know what I retract the comment in retrospect. I just thought it seemed a little unoriginal. Seriously, calm down. Finally, I'm sure Romeo knows he's targetting females, you don't work at a station like that without understanding your demo... I guess I just disagree with his methods and was hoping to spark an intelligent conversation. No need to get defensive

I must say that I disagree on (the original poster's view on) Deirdre Dagata, midday girl at KISS. I think she does a very good job on the air. Very relatable, very friendly, great sound. She's definitely very deserving of market 11. Romeo, however, I'll agree with you on. Matty is the stand-out and I think their night DJ is great too.

Yeah but the whole premise of your argument was pretty silly and somewhat petty. It actually sounded like words from a guy who didnt get a call back from Cadillac after he sent an aircheck if I may be completely frank.. The idea that you even brought up Z100 having a "Romeo" screamed "IM KNITPICKING ABOUT STUPID CRAP!" and his/her point was correct. YOU are not Kiss's demo so your dissection is meaningless, if you were a young female it would be number one on your presets. It is also not a ratings/revenue powerhouse still, after all these years, in a time when radio listening is in steep decline, by accident.

It is NOT the station it was in the old days, and does NOT really deserve a 30 year anniversary come 2009.

The only thing that really hasn't changed is the call letters and station ID.

Get serious! is ANYTHING the same as it was 30 years ago? quality or influence wise?. Music is not the same as it was then and that is a big part of it. You cant blame them for playing what is available to them which now are completely disposible "pop" artists, the hooks you hear today are not even hooks as much as programs that just happened to get used. SO few musicians are making music, it's mostly producers and performers, they look good on camera. SO for every Christina Aguilara who although Im no fan of her music she truly is a singer, there are at least a dozen Brooke Hogan's, Ciara's, etc, who aren't even making songs, they're basically recording ring tones masquerading as songs. Kiss can only play what is available so why dont YOU look into a thing known as reality before you bash a still powerful station like Kiss.

You're right, it's not the same station it was 30 years ago, but this business isn't the same it was 30 years ago...is that KISS 108's fault? I know pleanty of KISS' target demo that still LOVE the station and because their ratings and revenue are still where they are, they DO deserve props for holding their heritage and being successful with those who matter...THE LISTENERS.
