Kiss 95.1 HD Radio Signal

The HD Radio signal for Kiss 95.1 has been down for over a week now, but the analog seems to be functioning normally. Must be a technical problem of some sort. Perhaps it will be corrected soon. But Beasley has never added an additional subchannel since taking over from CBS. Seems like they would since 95.1 seems to have the strongest HD signal of the Beasley stations in Charlotte. Although 103.7 may go a bit further to the east, but 95.1 is stronger to the west. I can get 103.7 analog fine on my home receiver in Greenville, SC but the HD does not always lock on. Also get 101.9-HD, but you can forget the HD on 104.7, whereas even the analog is problematic because of the weak same channel signal with Columbia. And 97.9-HD signal is also weaker. Just seems like they would have more HD channels on 95.1 since it is the strongest signal.

I guess you know the tower for Kiss is farther west than the one for 103.7, and taller. The 104.7 tower, I believe, is also farther east and not as tall. Those towers on the east side were built when they didn't build TV towers as tall, or for FM radio.

Yes, both 95.1 and 96.1 broadcast from the tall WJZY TV tower in Gaston County. But 103.7 does seem to have a strong signal nevertheless. Meanwhile, the 95.1-HD signal remains down.

95.1, 96.1 and 97.9 are on the WJZY tower. 103.7 and 104.7 are on the Hood Rd tower where Channel 36 used to be. 104.7 is directional to protect another 104.7 in Columbia.

No idea why 95.1's HD's is off. They only have one full time engineer now and I understand they have a contract engineer looking after the transmitter sites.

I'm surprised to learn 97.9 is so far west. I get a lot of interference in the car from 97.9 where I live if I try to listen to WBRF on 98.1, but I assumed since WPEG is licensed to Concord that the tower was near there.

I don't think this is correct. We used to do the Computers for WPEG back in 1994-1995, and back then their HQ was right smack dab in Concord on the Highway. Tower+Broadcast Facilities was in the same location. Of course things could have changed since way back then but I do remember climbing a massive hill while driving up to Service their Computers. They had a lot of natural height with that location, and I'd be surprised if they had managed to find something better.

PS: Still have my WPEG Refrigerator Magnets from 1994 or so and can snap a pic of them if anyone is interested. :)

Steve.

Actually Steve they moved from Concord a long time ago. They were one of the first stations to be on the much taller WJZY tower.

Not only that the tower on Hwy 29 was taken down a couple of years ago. The guy wires weren't galvanized so they were supposed to be greased every so often. American Tower Systems who owned the tower decided not to do that so if fell into disrepair. The building was in terrible shape too. So CBS who owned the building decided to raise the building and the tower. They constructed a new much shorter tower and a pre-fab transmitter building for WEGO em I mean WTIX which has a long term lease there...

WPEG does have a backup transmitter at Radio Rd on the tall tower in WFNZ's array.

I am curious if WJZY, WBTV, and WCNC own and maintain their TV broadcasting towers, or are they leased or managed by American Tower or some other such company? Because WCNC only seems to use theirs for Channel 36 (RF22), whereas other radio stations also occupy the WBTV and WJZY towers. And seems like even 2 competing TV stations could share a tower to make it more economical. I had hoped WSOC-TV would have moved their Channel 9 signal to a taller Dallas area tower with the digital transition, but they decided not to. Would have given them a wider coverage area rather than having to use translators. I do not get reliable reception of Channel 9 past Spartanburg, but the Dallas signals are consistently strong. But next year the FCC may be changing the TV spectrum yet again.

I don't get good reception with WSOC-TV either, even though it is on the east side, but my antennas are turned toward Greensboro since I can get all the Charlotte stations with cable. I don't need WSOC-TV because for the first several months after the digital transition, I always picked up WXLV. And with one TiVo filling up I'm using it again, because lately it is reliable.

I don't pick up any stations with towers on the west side, but an outdoor antenna might work.

Noticed the HD was back on 95.1 when I tuned in today.

To my knowledge all of the Dallas TV towers are owned by the main stations on the tower. Raycom owns the WBTV tower, FOX Broadcasting owns the WJZY tower and Tegna (was Gannett) owns the WCNC tower.

Someone actually listening in HD? I'm impressed.

I have the old Sangean HDT-1 which doesn't display the HD data properly for some stations but I'd really like a reasonably priced HD clock radio and a reasonably priced double din car radio but both are rather scarce. I had better luck in the '80s finding AM Stereo radios and we know how that turned out.

I won't say HD Radio is dead because in order to be dead it would have to be alive at some point.

Yes 95.1-HD signal is back up. And they appear to have added an HD-2 channel.

Yea I have a Sony HD table radio, and the Sony HD tuner. Both have excellent analog and HD reception. I also have a first year JVC HD radio in the car that is about 8 years old. I have a new generation Kenwood receiver that I hope to install soon and I hope it will have a better HD tuner. But part of the problem with car reception is all these new low power signals interfering with the full power distant signals.

But overall they need to promote HD Radio better in the marketplace, as only the car radios seem to be selling. There are no home radios in the stores right now, although you can order Sparc HD Radio from Amazon.
