Kiss Concert 2011 sucked!

It seems like Kiss Concert has been going down the tubes further and further every year. Go to their website and check their lineup of artists. They only had 1 female artist this year total, and practically nobody has ever heard of her. Jessie J. Why can't they make room for more female artists?

Agree with Will, some artists either aren't available or not interested. From the looks of the crowd and the sponsor list, things continue to do well.

The lineup looked pretty good to me, all pretty good size artists.

I think that has more to do with Top 40 completely going down the tubes...it's the product.

That actually is pretty shocking considering how female-dominated CHR is these days. I would have expected there to be a lack of male artists if anything. For the record, though, Jessie J is becoming pretty big here.

Take a look at a Top 40 playlist, then take a look at the lineup. Who would you have preferred to see on the bill? Availability is one issue, but you also have to remember that if an artist can fill a stadium on her own, she's not going to sign on to a radio station concert. Superstars are out. Who would you have had for female artists?

It's probably more politics and money than anything else. The concert industry is incredibly cannibalistic these days. The death of music sales as a viable business model has put tremendous upward pressure on concert prices...primarily for the acts (you can't sign a "name act" for less than $75k these days...and over $100k is more common) which in turn puts huge upward pressure on ticket prices. We're on the downswing of that, though...people are fed up and not going, and a lot of shows are failing miserably, so the venues are refusing to take all the risk anymore.

As for Top40 going down the tubes, remember that the strategy is that if you're over 18, you're not the audience. :) Technically, under 18 isn't technically the audience either...it's the parents of those teens. In the sense that they sell to the teens who convince their parents to make the purchase.

I consider Jessie J and Nicky Minaj sorta like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie....They are famous because we are told they are.

As far as Jessie and Nicky, I've never heard them on the radio, I've never seen them sing or be interviewed, I've never seen or heard anything they've supposedly done...but yet they are supposedly huge, successful and famous????

Jessie is enjoying her first hit, and Nicki is more popular at Rhythmic. She's rapped on a couple of pop hits ("Bedrock" and "Bottoms Up") as well.

"Superstars are out."

Yes, they are out now.... but that's the thing: In the past, superstars were very much in at the Kiss concerts (take a look at some of the past lineups).

But then again, former owner Richie Balsbaugh had some pull with the record companies and could make things happen.

It's really not fair to compare radio concerts of today with the shows before Elliot Spitzer and his second wave or third wave of payola campaign targeted mostly against what used to be considered harmless promotion. Most of the radio shows of the past don't even exist today or couldn't because of this. In days of old record companies would gladly give you artists and foot all the bill for promotional purposes. If you would showcase a few of their rising stars and a few hopefuls you could negotiate a superstar or two. Those days are gone and now artists at any level cost real money. Obviously some cost more than others but the few radio shows that survive today are the ones that have figured out how to make enough of a profit to cover their costs and more. It is amazing that Kiss108 who started these radio shows is one of the few that has survived all these changes.

EVERYBODY had pull with record companies in the 90's. You can't compare the industry of today to the industry of 15 years ago. It's a different world out there. The record industry has changed, the economics have changed, everything's changed. If anyone were to have pull though, you think it'd be freakin' Clear Channel.

Nobody's suggested any better artists though. Anyone? Anyone?

It's all been going downhill since Clear Channel took over that station, it's been going downhill. Live DJs are being replaced by voicetracking! Next thing you know, Tom Joyner will take over Matty's morning slot and put WILD-AM 1090 into the dustbin! Ryan Seacrest will still be on the midday spot, John Tesh will have afternoon drive, then Delilah will cannibalize evenings. That means, they'll be running Mia 1430's music overnight.
