KISS fires morning DJ

A MONTH? What did he do, screw the PD's wife? Molest children? Piss off their only sponsor? Expect a paycheck?

I've heard through some reliable sources that it was mostly political.

After all, it's almost impossible to tell how the guy's performance will impact the ratings. He had only been there a month and the spring book hasn't even ended yet. I thought he was decent, but I can't say I've listened often enough to really make a solid call. When the book comes out, it'll be interesting to see if anyone with access to Maximi$er (Dave?) can break out just those weeks alone, and see if the morning numbers were any better than the rest of the book.

Interesting how he's getting a severance but he also blogged about it. Usually, severance agreements require the outgoing employees to keep quiet... that's one of the main reasons companies do severances in the first place. As much as he claims he held back, and as much as he may or may not be in the right, that could turn off any potential future employers who happen to find it.

Political? That would be news to me. Sometimes situations just don't work out, and this is one of them. Its common in radio.

I use my personal blog in order to communicate with my friends and family that are scattered all over the country, and I did not impugn anyone in the company.

I am just desperately trying to get out of Utica.

Dude the format change idea was the stupidest thing I'd ever heard. Why potentially blow off an audience just to introduce a new morning host! Idiots!!! That should have been a huge red flag bro...any PD that came to me with that lame of an idea would see my backside as I exit the building for good! Kiss needs a good cleansing from top to bottom!

Hi Bob...Am also curious as to how the three weeks look when the new morning host was on air. Will have to take a look when the info is received. I thought the morning show was OK, but nothing great. The entire air staff is average at best, in my opinion, but as we know, most listeners of today are not paying as much attention to on air talent, especially in smaller markets as they did 20 to 30 years ago. Seems like the music, contests and promotions make the difference...even though in the Utica/Rome market, trends across the country do not seem to follow suit. Most listeners in this area fall into a music or favorite radio station rut and do not seem to know any better. There are some tired sounding radio stations in the Utica/Rome market, but people still listen to them. Probably would not be the case in many other markets, but in defense of the same old tired music, etc, the competition who could probably take command, never seems make that solid effort.

In any event, I read that Kenny The Promo Guy will be doing mornings on KISS until they find another replacement. Great Guy, Fun to Listen to, and just what the station needs right now. Go Kenny.

Hi Dave (and everyone else),

Thanks for the kind words... I don't know much of the situation at the station but I received a call over the weekend to see if I would fill in for a little bit. As many know I have a full time gig at Herkimer College that I love but I still have a passion for the radio world and am willing to step in where needed.

Time to get to bed... I do remember one thing as many morning guys have pointed out... 4:30am is awful early lol...

Read your blog post. http://www.thetumbrel.com/eric_thomas/2009/06/eric-fired-from-utica.html.

Never heard your show, brother, but getting blown out after three weeks makes the management look very suspicious. You could be the next Kid Kraddick or you might suck. I dunno. The fact is, management looks worse than you do in this move. If you're good, they made a big mistake firing you. If you're not good, they made a mistake bringing you in. Take heart, you're not the first guy to get blown out or leave a gig within a short period. At least you got a severence.

That you survived Citadel Michigan, a swillhole of a company run by amoral ******nozzles that fired a guy who had cancer and subsequently denied his medical benefits, and morons who ran the stock price to around six cents a share, should make your situation seem like a day at the beach. Good luck.

Right on, man. I don't usually fall for that crap any more, but to do that to your listeners was absolute and complete bull sh**! I'm glad you're out of there.

What a ------- -------- thing to say, ------! How the ---- do you know who proposed that promotion or if I was okay with it? What should I have done? Walked into that place and tell them all of their ideas are stupid? Yeah, that's a great way to ingratiate yourself to a new office.

Hey Guys:

That dosen't suprise me at all. And this coming from an owner that has only what 3 STATIONS in the entire US!! They did that to a jock in West Palm Beach at Sunny 104.3. Clay Culver. Hired him for afternoon drive. Busted his ass for the station, had great ratings then fired him 6 months later. He had just moved with his wife from Texas. He is a first class guy. Someone you would want on your station. UNBEILEVABLE!! The reason he was given: the station was going into a diffrent direction. The station moved its midday woman jock (whose name I can't remember) to afternoons and automated the middays with the morning jock.

GOOD LUCK ERIC!!

Adman, a few posts back you said you'd be interested in checking how Kiss did during the 3 weeks Eric Thomas was on the air.
Since you now have the book... how did he do?

I imagine there would be a little spike in the Thurs-Wed week that included the weekend leading up to the format change. Did the momentum hold, or did listeners really turn off the station in protest like so many "claimed" they would?

If I'm counting the calendar right, that would be week #7 from the spring book. I know you can't give specific numbers, but maybe the difference or trends from week 6 to 7 and then week 7 to 8? Any lasting impact that continued through the duration of the book?

I know you said they were "flat to slightly lower" in another thread here, just wondering how these weeks specifically impacted things.

even if it spiked to #1 12+. I wouldn't be able to take credit for it. The book system just doesn't work that way. You can see trends, but one ratings period in a vacuum does not tell you anything definitive. No one has any idea how a radio show is going to sound in the first month, let alone 6 months. I didn't have any imaging, anything established, or any sense of comfort or consistency. I have hosted shows that eventually went to #1, and it takes a great deal of patience to accomplish that. TONS of patience. A show must find its voice, and I was only on for a month.

btw.. the "in a lot of trouble" name is not indicative of my current situation. I am living in DC, working for Metro Traffic. I am having a blast and loving my job.
