KISS-FM moving mainstream

In the past couple weeks KISS has made a pretty serious move towards mainstream and away from Rhythmic. It's actually pretty great, the playlist is very balanced right now. I wonder if this is a reaction to WINK which has been skewing more towards AC lately. Or perhaps the entry of Channel 106.7 which is going after the upper end of their demo.

There is really no reason why KISS shouldn't be mainstream and go after somewhat older demos, it hurts Wink while it shouldn't really effect WRVV much.

Dan, thank you for the observation. After all, this board exists to discuss radio stations. I'm not sure I've ever listened to Kiss but I will certainly give them a listen. As Rock of HBG stated elsewhere, CHR is in a "mass appeal cycle" right now and that usually leads to better 25-54 #s for the format.

I agree with your assessment. WNNK has really gotten "light" as far as Hot A/C stations go. And Channel 1067 is certainly attacking their upper end. A more mainstream CHR approach with less rhythmic could take a bite out of WNNK. What does WNNK do with Hot under their roof?

The River should be just fine. Doubtful that Lady Gaga fans would spend very much time with them and fans of 70s and 80s rock would give Kiss much of a listen.

CC appears to be making the right moves with these stations. Good luck to JT and the gang.

Nice to see that Radio Babe is back making another one of her useless and ignorant comments. Welcome back! Of course Radio Babe could also be a he.

Yup, he sure could be, couldn't he? ;D

Dan is right. I've noticed lately that Kiss is more mainstream CHR. I used to listen to them now and then but lately 99.3 is the station I mostly tune into. I like hearing more variety like Kiss has on right now from Michael Buble to Eminen and everything in between. Just wish there signal was better north of Harrisburg where I live. Thank goodness for internet radio and iheartradio.

KISS-99 has no reason to go mainstream, and won't permanently. HOT-92 becomes the kids' new
radio home if KISS strays from them. I only listen to KISS when my kids punch it up in the car.
When the kids aren't in the car, I punch all the pre-sets until I find something I can listen to.

My bet is Channel-1067 will morph into either "MY-1067" (all "requests" from phone, text, e-mail) or keep the moniker and promote "We play what we damn well please". Both versions of such random playlists are being tried in other markets; the jury is still out on whether it draws in the Arbs. What Citadel does might depend on what (if anything) CC does with a tired sounding River.

Who cares who gets the kiddies though? I don't believe KISS-FM moving mainstream is going to hurt them in the least, remember it signed on to go after Wink 104. It succeeded at first but now Wink is stronger than ever. There is now a hole for a Hot AC/Adult CHR sounding station that Channel 106.7 is probably going to fill for at least the time being.

You are right about The River. It just isn't what it used to be. It's going to be interesting to see what this station evolves into.

Ultimately, it's Channel 1067 that could evolve into a full fledged CHR. With that signal, it could be a real battle in Lancaster vs LAN and in Harrisburg with the lesser two CHR signaled stations. The station would alos get in WNNKs cross hairs, if it hasn't done so already.

York is wide open for a CHR and has been for a number of years.

Why does this make sense? Because, with any Gold based station, even one based in the late 80s to the early 2000s, will become stale if it doesn't freshen up its library from time to time.

CHR music is very Adult female friendly right now.
