KISS IN CHICAGO

WKSC and B96 may as well be the same exact station.

WKSC (I have more to say about WKSC since I listen to it the most):

Airstaff: WKSC's airstaff outside of Drex, Radio Boy and Chris Kelly all talk like a typical B96 jock.

Smash (Jeff Murray) handles middays before Nina steps in for the 2nd half of the midday. He talks way more ghettoish then before. Whenever I listen he always basically comes to listeners with a problem or a question and takes calls for opinions and advice.

Nina is like a more ghetto sounding version of Nikki.

Ty is your typical white guy trying to sound ghetto but not to the extreme.

Mack is the same as Ty. Typical night show with favorites like "Hot Girl Check In", great contests like "dump yo boyfriend on the air for a trip to Jamacia" and my favorite "aiight stick yo cell phone up yo [EDIT]and yell SPRING BREAK!"

Alexx Dupri sounds like she's from the south. Most of what she talks about is celebrity gossip.

Segues: Songs crossfade, play a few seconds, then a dry cheaply produced liner fires up and hits the post. I think WLIT is starting to do this as well.

Breaks: You'll NEVER hear the DJ start their break with station name. When I first heard them do this I thought they were playing chopped up voice tracks from another station with the name chopped out.

Processing: Poopy. I've made mention of this before. It sounds like an internet stream. They still have reverb but it shuts off during the Drex Morning Show and its nowhere near as good as it used to be prior to 2005.

Playlist: They play very little rock (1-2 songs every few hours) basically if its rock don't expect to hear it unless its Panic! At The Disco, Rockell - In A Dream and Nice N Wild - Diamond Girl sound like they are being played in power rotation and I swear I am hearing 2 songs by the same artist being played back to back on a regular basis. I don't know if I'm hallucinating or not.

Features: They have a new feature called "4 Play" which I think is the best thing they got going now. Listeners submit a 4 song playlist and if the DJ picks it, it'll get played and if the listener calls back they'll win $103 and $400 if they are a Kiss Club member on their website. I like some of the songs the listeners pick. Some I haven't heard in awhile.

Imaging: ONE, OH, THREE, FIVE (103-5 in Spanish) KISS FM with heavy use of the Adobe Audition/Cool Edit "Slow Loop Delay" effect which can be found under Effects/Delay Effects in the Edit Waveform View. The main reason for this I am guessing is because most of the liners play ontop of songs and any major imaging elements wouldn't blend in too well with the intros.

B96:

I don't listen to B96 much. Eddie & Jobo have added a female to their show named Erica. I believe this was to give the show a younger vibe to it if thats at all possible.

Roxanne has moved to middays.

Stylez & Roman AKA Holla & Bling Bling are now afternoons fo sho.

The new evening guy Julian from WIHT from what very little I have heard makes prank calls and with slap backs like "I know Karate"

Processing has changed somewhat since they moved to their new studio.

Ratings: Both stations are very close to each other in the numbers since WKSC started becoming a complete carbon copy of B96. So I guess the listeners must love it.

[EDIT-vulgar]

Forgot to mention that WKSC is now giving out their phone number as "591-1035-KISS FM" (too many numbers) which is dumb.

They're now allowing listeners to text message them at 51035 which is smart and with the times.

If you listen on the internet, you are about 10 seconds ahead of the FM. Usually its the other way around.

They also tweaked their logo again (dropping the blue ball) so it now resembles KIIS Los Angeles' current logo. You can check that out at kisschicago.com

I see a difference in the playlists. The B remains nearly all hip-hop/R&B while KISS throws in more of the "pop" 100.

The "4 Play" is definately a great bit and a nice change from the normal 90 minute loop of songs. I've heard some great lists.

I agree that KISS is sounding more ghetto daily. I can't even listen to Nina Chantele with her "much love" and "love you girl" garbage. It's annoying. The irony is that Nikki is the one on Power92. Smash's show is fine most days but some days he completely makes up a topic. The whole "who's smarter - guys or girls" stuff is for Omaha radio, not Chicago. Drex still runs a good show and is still better than 60 year old white guys playing hip-hop.
