KISS or Q?

So with 2 CHRs in Cincy, which do you prefer and why?

I like Q's imaging and jingles with their interactive-friendly DJs but I like KISS's "Now" kinda sound... a good mainstream/rhythmic balance. All-in-All, who do you prefer for hit music?

You would think with Kid Kelly apart of Sirius Hits 1, it'd sound better.

I think Q and KISS are both pretty Cincinnati-friendly. Sure we could use an AMP or NOW.... but if you had to pick, which?

Only if CBS still owned Q102 would be the only way for a AMP or Now to happen in Cincinnati. Your only hope is for Cmulus to flip 94.1 to CHR. Sirius Hits 1 doesn't sound that bad to me although I can't say that I listen to them much on Sirius.

I doubt they would've flipped it either way. I wonder what Cumulus is going to do. WNNF CANNOT be working. Sirius Hits 1 is pretty much filled with flops they call new music. I guess they seem to think it works, but I don't like the idea of it. There's no real CHR on Sirius.

Back to Q102, it's a good Adult CHR, but they've gotten even more mainstream lately. KISS isn't as corporate-controlled with Jordan as MD.

There may not be room for a third CHR in this market so I wouldn't think Cumulus is that anxious to try it on 94.1. WRRM is Q102 lite anyway so they may not want CHR on 94.1.

There isn't room for a third CHR. But I mean, look at Nashville.... they have 3... Cumulus is the new one. I-106.... could Frequency become an I? But usually I's are adult CHR. Would go directly against Q.

I was also doing a DJ matchup...

Morning Drive: Jeff & Jenn vs. Tim & MMCMG

I think both morning shows are targeted to the women... Jeff & Jenn are very 30+ when I think Tim & MMCMG are for the 18-34 demo talking about more "CHR topics" rather than Hot AC... and less women rule, men suck...

Tim & MMCMG also still plays less commercials and more music.

Midday Drive: Holly vs. Seacrest

Anyone a die-hard radio fan would prefer local over syndicated. Holly Morgan is awesome and she definitely represents the women on Q in a good way. Seacrest, however, seems to be getting the ratings everywhere. I would rather listen to anything local before Seacrest though.

Jordan vs. Brian & Laura

Jordan is also very good and he does the question of the day and gives out loads of prizes. Commercial free in the afternoons and plays the right amount of hits because B&L talk A LOT during their show. They also take a lot of callers, but it tends to be annoying with their talking and the commercial load. Q also seems very hot ac during their show. I prefer Jordan.

Jon Jon vs. Hurley

I haven't really listened to much of Hurley but I know he's VT'd and not even from Cincy. That's a big no no for being at the night-time spot. There's nothing really worth listening to on KISS at night because it IS commercial free, but it's VT'd from another city. Although, I did like Holly at nights, Jon Jon is really good and started off as a fill-in/intern. He takes callers and also does the Top Requested each hour. VERY interactive and it hits KISS hard... He wins easily.

Auto vs. Premium Choice (Overnights)

Like I said before, local wins over anything syndicated and watered-down.

Your thoughts?

Microbob it didnt stop Cumulus in indy in flipping Warm 93.9 to CHR as I94 when Indy already had 2 CHR stations. and they did the same in nashville. so what would stop them from making 94.1 the 3rd CHR in Cincy. the only thing that would is if they had a deal with CC not to make it CHR like Cumulus does have with 96.5 preventing it to be country for a few years

It would not surprise me if CC has a deal with Cumulus preventing them from making 94.1 a CHR. I believe the deal with 96.5 is up next year since it was for 3 yrs.

Here's what a real CHR should still sound like and Q102 did back in the day. This is legendary Z100.

Z100 New York Kid Kelly 1990

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et1dw9vwsAk&feature=related

Q-102 NEVER sounded like Z-100. The Q was always late on records in the 80s unlike Z, which was active on new music. While Z-100 supported a good bit of Dance in the 80s, Q-102 was more Rock friendly though they did play all the big national hits. Q-102 was influenced by a lot of the other Midwestern CHRs of its day.

I think both Q and Kiss sound great today. Both take chances on new music - Q with some great Pop and Adult friendly records while Kiss on Pop and Rhythmic/Pop records. They both sound like CHRs that are focused on Cincy, yet with enough of a distinction between them.

As for Nashville, we actually have 2 CHRs not three - 102.5 The Party evolved to a Rhythmic CHR within days after we got I-106.

Indianapolis? Two CHRs with I-94 and Radio Now 100.9. WZPL is a Hot A/C though it was the market's dominant CHR in the 80s and 90s (especially in the 80s) just as Q was in Cincy.

Just out of curiosity, would Clueless try to buy the WSAI calls if it introduced an "I" station? I think it did something similar in Dallas.

Back to the original thread at hand for a moment, before I even attempt to speculate on a flip of 94.1...

I'm a Q fan. Have been for years. Surprised? Shouldn't be...I have been a fan going back to around age 15. So that makes it 9 years. Jon Jon grew on me after taking over for Holly and is getting better. And that kid is only 23 so as long as Bonneville wants him around, I think he's golden as far as staying in Cincy. And Holly...9th hottest woman in US Radio...nuff said!

That said, thinking about 94.1 for a moment...

I don't see them flipping 94.1, unless it were to protect 98.5 similar to what Bonneville does with B and The Wolf... However, last I checked, both 94.1 and Q102 were classified as Hot AC stations and as such both compete for the same listener base.

Frequency is a bad example of a Hot AC... I don't really like it. 94.1 has been though so much lately.

Hot AC with Mix.
Rhythmic AC stiff with Mix.
Then it finally flipped and got sold off..... it's just horrible.

Just because they cant put CHR on 94.1 that doesnt prevent Cumulus from moving say 96 Rock or WGRR to 94.1 then putting the CHR on 96.5 or 103.5. I Dont see Cumulus being stupid enough to move Warm 98 from 98.5. but then again it be stupid to move WGRR as well.
