KISS = Strong

99.5 KISS is booming in Houston like a local; this station is locked with a full signal on my Realistic STA-2000 receiver. These Cox stations must have some power in their tower. Also picking up Magic 105.3. If there wasn't anything on 100.3 or 101.1 here, I'm sure I could pick up Y100 and KONO.

Which is why you are able to get KISS and KSMG, nothing else is on those dials near Houston. If they put up translators on those dials then you won't. Have you had any luck with KUT or BobFM? Last time I came down to Houston I pulled in BobFM pretty decent in the morning.

IIRC, KISS recently upgraded to a taller antenna... maybe 2000 ft above average terrain. The tower is east-southeast of San Antonio, so it's closer to Houston, with no hills to block the signal, and little if any steel to absorb the power. Betcha Magic is up there too on the same stick. Then there's that boundary layer between the moist south winds at the surface and the dry west winds aloft. Tropo Ducting Skip across a charged layer of atmosphere?

Is that an antenna for your car or home??

I'm pulling stations off a '77 Realistic STA-2000D receiver with just a ribbion antenna - talk about a strong tuner! I'm about 35 miles from the gulf and 10 miles from Galveston Bay.

Right now, KBXX is clobbering La Raza 98.5 (booming in like a local!), and KOUL out of CC is clobbering KHJK on 103.7.

Also receiving KJ97 which is killing KTHT 97.1 with the help of 96.9 in Victoria.

Strong reception night here in Austin too. I just picked up 102.5 WFMF out of Baton Rouge a few minutes ago, along with several stations from SW LA and SE TX (Lake Charles, Beaumont, etc.)

WOW!!! I can't believe you picked up WFMF! I grew up on that station. What kind of antenna did you use? What other Louisiana stations were you able to pick up?

Sure did! This is some of the strongest Tropo we've had in awhile. I picked up WFMF on my car radio, driving between Round Rock and Georgetown. At first I thought it was Magic 102.5 out of Beaumont, but lo and behold...

So far tonight I've picked up: 104.5 KKMY, Kicker 95.1, Q94.1 and Big Dog 106 in Beaumont/Port Arthur.... 99.5 The Gator and Kicks 96 from Lake Charles.... 97-3 The Dog from Lafayette and then WFMF. The night is still early. I am also picking up at least 8 or 9 Houston stations, crystal clear, on my pocket radio! Wouldn't be surprised to start pulling in New Orleans stations as well (I've picked up Magic 101.9 and B97.1 in the past). I'll let you guys know!

Wow Jimmy that is good stuff. I'm surprised you pulled in 99-5 the Gator over 99-5 KISS. With that kind of tropo, you may be able to pull in 99.9 KTDY out of Lafayette.

It got even better as the night went on. Sure enough, New Orleans stations started booming in...including Magic 101.9, 98.5 WYLD and surprisingly 94.3 WTIX (never picked that up before). My personal record for tropo occurred several years ago... I picked up stations from Panama City and Fort Walton Beach, FL (Island 106.1, Z96.5, etc.). That's over 700 miles (borderline E-skip distance...but definitely tropo)!

EDIT: I've picked up 99.9 KTDY on numerous occasions, but forgot to try for it this go-round. Also forgot to mention, I picked up 102.1 KQIS from Lafayette as well Thursday night.

I was driving back from Waco early Sunday morning, around 3:30am, and I tried to pick up WFMF but couldn't. I tried listening through the static for ten minutes or so but didn't have any luck. I couldn't even hear Mason or Beaumont's 102.5 stations. If I had more time, maybe I could have picked it up.

I was able to pick up 102.1 out of Houston in Waco, and I picked it up from Waco to Temple, which is crazy to me because you would think KDGE would come in instead because it has the same wattage and is much closer.

I couldn't get 106-9 The Point in Round Rock/Georgetown like I usually can, instead I was pulling in a country station. I think it was out of Kempner/Killeen.

California FM in Texas 5-10-10

Here in Canyon Lake, we were pulling in very stong signals from Houston. Stations like KONO were being overpowered by KLOL and the Devers Sticks (93.3 and 98.5) were on top of KGSR and KBBT as well.

I had a real good and odd catch today. I was driving on 46 about 2:00 PM today and was pulling in Spanish Language on 94.5 (along with "The Buzz out of Houston and KFRQ from Harlingen). The Spanish station turned out to be KSEH from Brawley, California. I caught the ID. The last time I pulled in California FM's here, the San Diego FM's (91X, KBZT, KYXY, and KGB FM were all clear). No other frequencies from Southern California were received. Is that odd that only one FM station from a great distance could be heard and the rest of the dial while a little "juiced" was relatively normal?
