Kiss Worried?

I heard a jock tonight do a break emphasizing the frequency. he said "on Kiss 97.3, Point 3, point 3" If I was the PD of Kiss I would talk to him and tell him "We are not worried about Wild 97.7. Just pretend that they are not there." After all, KKSS is the hunted, not the hunter. They should be doing business as usual. Do not point attention toward the competition. If that jock did that again he would be fired.

Competition. Great, aint it?

Kiss better have something up their sleeve or this battle will be over quickly.

Maybe they can still win in Santa Fe. Oh I forgot KOB-FM is winning there.

Think about it. They will be playing more music in the morning, and in the PM. I think people are tired of the same songs like Crime Mob "Rock Your Hips" and DJ Unk "2 Step" between commercials. And the Talent? gimme a break!

House party is stale. They failed in Houston and can be beat here as well. Send them back to Odessa.

Julio G is now "Julio Jeezy" and too cool for the room. And says the word "man" about 15 times a break.

Johnny V is a good jock. Just about the only good thing they have going.

And NQ is OK but can be beat in one book.

Any Comments?

What you heard emphasizing point 3..was a sweeper that is programmed in. The jock had no input .. and he should be fired? Wow! It's been on the air for weeks.

Competition is great..but another hiphop station is one too many.
It will all boil down to advertiser support. Which is tenuous right now.

I wonder why AGM didn't plug the gaping hot AC hole..just begging to be filled.

They'll cause a wave in the market as any new station does, but longevity?
We'll see. Under Hutton, this would be another fiasco..under the new management
it will be interesting.

How do you figure there is a "gaping" Hot AC hole? Between KPEK, which is in the Top 5 25-54, and KMGA, an AC that also does well? Even KKOB-FM occasionally leans a little more Hot AC than most CHR's....Then there is KDRF, another Top 5 25-54, which has loads of Hot AC gold titles.....just without the currents.

As for KKSS, they should be very worried. Listening to 97.7 ,it's obvious that they are way more familiar than KKSS. On top of that, they are doing the good old "10,000 jams in a row...with no commercials". No they just need to market....pretty sure that will come in early 2008

Well when ya have no bills to pay ya can do 10,000 jams, So will Kiss drop a few spots, get a little tighter playlist, be quicker to the new jams and do a Kick A-- Contest like give away 97 doallars and 3o cents every hour! with a lucky daily winner getting 973 dollars and then a grand prize winner getting 9,730 dollars by saying the phrase that pays if its hip hop and RB it must be 97.3 Kiss or something like that ya get the idea

Yes we get the idea... Use the "new" Wild... What an oxymoron there. Well they will go after 97.3, so one will have to give away either 97.7 or 97.3 dollars (very innovative, genius I must say) so that one could win the regurgitated radio title. Wow that would be great.

Can't understand why Kiss would be worried. They could pick up The Buzzard and the circle would be complete once again!

It's the weekend and I can't sleep, so I'll give my two cents on this one. Remember, my comments are just my opinion, and will stick to the subject of radio and radio only.

Wild 97.7 - Sounds good. 10,000 or 10,000 works right now. Hate the imaging (although I LOVE the female voice!!). Too much St. John. Remember, you don't just want everyone to go "Oh OK...Wild is back on...pass me the salt". More of the female voice will help with that. Initially, being that close to KKSS on the dial will help people find the station (especially since marketing $$ won't arrive until later). Ultimately though, IMHO, it will benefit KKSS with diaries when listeners say 97.3 out of habit. If I'm AGM, I brand the word "WILD" like crazy (which is already being emphasized). The songs sound on point right now. Rotation is pretty tight. Only a couple of songs trigger my "dog ears" (if you know me, then you know what that means). Should be interesting to see what happens to WILD when jocks come on. With all due respect to former WILD staffers, I think bringing back too many old WILD 106 vets to 97.7 would be a mistake. If AGM is gonna compete with KISS, they need new jocks on. The music is the same...the station voice is the same. Put new jocks on to give it a "wow" factor of some sort. This will be a tough battle against the heritage station in the format, which brings me to...

KKSS - Because of my past with some folks at this station, you would think that I can't be impartial about what I think of this station. I will do my best, though...starting with: The music: OK...although I'm glad to hear some of the latino-friendly tracks return after Homie left(and my old Mega as well...R.I.P). They need to keep that going. The Morning show: Ah, The House Party. I know this may sound crazy to some of you coming from me, but people may not know that my personal opinion of Dana Cortez is that I think she is one of the most natural, talented on-air personalities I've ever heard. My personal problems with DC have absolutely nothing to do with her on-air skills. Maybe someday this lady and I will have a sit down to hash out our issues. By the way...congrats on the birth of your baby! Kandee? Sorry...you're the weak on-air link. Don't take it personal. It's just that being Dana's "best friend" doesn't mean you should be "on-air". Just being honest. Perhaps a few more on-air shifts by yourself would help. It's good to work on your skills as an individual jock and not just as a sidekick. Julio G: A very good jock, when he isn't trying out for 106 and Park on BET. "Don't sleep"? "It's ya Big Homie"? Just try to keep it a little "more ABQ" and "less NYC". Johnny V? The best...'nuff said. This man should have been working in a major market for years now. But he chooses ABQ. It took me a few years(and 3 other stations in 2 other states) to realize that ABQ is a good place to settle down. M-Kue? Has a very natural delivery that sounds good. Not your typical "flamethrower" night jock that you hear about, but it's a nice change of pace. Imaging? Sounds OK. I like the listener audio in sweeps. Sounds "connected" to the people, which in this format is essential.

There. I bet you didn't think I could give an honest and impartial opinion of KKSS, did you. But I did! Sorry if any KISS staff get upset by my comments. However, if you know me, then you know that what I said is also the truth, IMHO. I know that I'm far from the perfect jock myself. I have serious problems (and some are actually on-air, too...LOL!). I say "family" too much...I ramble too often...my laugh sounds fake...I use the term "Aww man!" too often...sometimes I go into a break without really knowing what I'm gonna do (bad Benny!)... I can get very pukey on-air when I get excited...and if I tell a winner "Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!" one more time, I'll throw up! But I also know what I have to work on to continue improving my skills. I have people I work with that aren't afraid to tell me that I suck at this, that, or the other. Do you? I appreciate it. It brings me back to earth. Most people that tell me I'm "awesome" or whatever usually follow it up with "So, can you get me some tickets?" I don't honestly belive that EVERYONE likes me (on-air or on the street!). However, real radio people will give you their blunt, honest opinion, knowing that you'll use that advice to hopefully improve. That's what my analysis is all about. I hope you can understand that.

My overall impression of the whole KISS vs WILD situation is 1) WILD at first will benefit from the signal location, but unless they brand the hell out of the word "WILD" and use more of homegirl in the sweeps, they will eventually have a tough road in the long run. 2) I think that KKSS has gotten a little lazy due to having no direct competition(CHR/RHY) in the market for over a year. 3) I think the real fun will begin in middle to late JAN or FEB when WILD should be staffed, and KKSS will have had a month to get a PD and start preparing for the battle ahead. I would like to add that I have received my share of battle scars from taking on KKSS in the past, and I know this will get ugly. Just remember guys... I will be listening from a safe distance...playing my Commodores, Usher and Janet Jackson on Hot 95.1. My advice? Have fun.... and focus on YOUR job. Don't worry...I'm focused on mine! And for those of you that say "mind your own business"? Radio IS my business. This will be interesting!! Love ya, radio family!! Laterzzz!!
