KISW

In looking at Seattle it appears there is a real hole in the market for a male talk option or a new generation Classic Rock (Like the Brew in Portland) or a straight ahead Active Rock to challenge KISW. The station is primarily talk in afternoons and mornings and is doing very well 6+ and 25-54 over the last six to eight months. The most likely stations to challenge them would be THE END and KMTT which have been suffering in ratings of late, but they are already in the Entercom Cluster. Sandusky must be taking a look at this, especially with the success of their 98 KUPD in Phoenix, one of the best Active Rock stations in America. Might be a good adjustment for KLCK or possibly KQMV. JACK might also adjust, since it would make a nice combo with KZOK. Both KZOK and JACK have been hurt by KJR-FM and really tend to compete against each other. Could be the move for KMCQ and its new ownership, whomever that might be?

Last year saw several formats enter the female arena with KJR-FM going from Classic Hits to Oldies and getting solid female numbers, KLCK coming on the air as a HOT/AC and Funky Monkey became HOT/AC GenX. Take the men from KJR, the 1.9 share of Active Rock at the Funky Monkey and it all seemed to go to KISW. (KISW share is exactly last year's 6+ rating, plus the Funky Monkey's old number)

Just seems like an obvious gap in the market as so many stations leaned female. KISW is so strong in men they now own 6+ and 25-54 in Seattle. Besides we are half way through the year and no one has talked for format flips. Would seem KMTT, THE END, JACK, KLCK have got to be looking to do something. Lot's of AM stations need help too, but the format options on AM are few for KVI, KTTH, KPTK, KIRO-AM all sitting below 20th place in prime demos. Maybe a male talk AM like the Buzz used to be...

Amen, Gary!

@radioguy123 ..... 98 KUPD? What about 93.3 KDKB? Same company and equal product imo..

KDKB and KUPD are both Sandusky I believe. KUPD has about twice the 25-54 male numbers and is much stronger overall 6+ KDKB actually has more young male cume and more Metallica. Sandusky could easily morph those stations and take on KISW. My point is they own the genre in Phoenix and KLCK could make the easy adjustment.

I agree, for now KISW needs to enjoy the ride. The one sure thing in radio is change.

And 98.9 is the PERFECT dial position.......

I think the "Radio for Guys" bit has ran its course. Unless it's being peppered with music in-between all the macho shit and T and A opinions etc, it seems to burn itself out after a while. Redundant snicker and snort dialog from older boys/younger men tires out quickly. I hear stations trying everything now. I'm sure someone has thought about putting out a 1khz burst tone for 24/7 just to see if it could pull some numbers. (Chill out. Kidding). ;D

LOL well we can throw the Mighty KXRX and even The Mountain in that stew. Be safe.

Didn't Entercom already try FM talk radio for men with BJ Shea, Robin and Maynard , Leykis etc back about 10 years ago ?

Yep, KQBZ 100.7 The Buzz. The station that launched BJ Shea and made Tom Leykis a household name in Puget Sound.

In my opinion, Robin & Maynard, for all their talent and longevity in Seattle were somehow TOTALLY mismatched for The Buzz. It was the greatest possible show on the wrongest possible station for it. And that's not factoring KQBZ's infamous behind the scenes infighting and overall mediocre ratings which ultimately led Entercom to flip it to country. Even KJR-FM, KMTT or KBSG would have been much better for R&M than The Buzz.

Tom Leykis is coming back next April (whether as an online thing or a nationally syndicated radio show, I'm not quite sure.) But he's got an online radio/podcast thing called the New Normal (on http://blowmeuptom.com/ )

I truly LOVED the X.. IMO one of the best radio stations to have ever existed. The Mountain is a very cool station, just not my cup of Starbucks. Too "smart" for me.. I'm a little more Whiskey Tango..

Speaking of KISW... I was listen a bit the last few days and they played sublime a few times. What's with that? I would expect to here that the 1077.

When you are at the top of the mountain there is only one direction you can go and that is down... The only question is how long can you delay that slide back down and how far you down you actually slide...
