Kitchener/Waterloo's CKKW moving to FM

There’s more news on the AM to FM front in Canada. This time, the market of Kitchener/Waterloo gets to experience the joys of a station moving to FM, as CKKW (1090) is granted a move to 99.5 FM. You may remember that the 99.5 frequency was tried in Kitchener/Waterloo, when Country station CIKZ used that frequency, but experienced interference from WDCX Buffalo, NY. Will CKKW have better luck?

And, now, the big question: The format. When I read about this in Northeast Radio Watch, it’s author, Scott Fybush, wrote: “And will it’s Oldies format really survive the move to FM, as CTV claims in it’s application?” Well, IMO, if you had asked me this about a year ago, I’d’ve said “absolutely not!” But, over the past several months, the Classic Hits format, the child of Oldies, has been put on some FM stations in Canada. Unlike other areas of Ontario, Kitchener/Waterloo does not have a Classic Rock station, according to my search of radiostationworld.com. So, if CTVglobemedia wanted to do that format there, it’s wide open for them. But… They could take things a step further! According to an article I read from Edison Media Research’s Sean Ross, the newest convert to Classic Hits/Oldies, CKCL (104.9 Vancouver, BC, CA), is actuallly more Oldies than Classic Hits leaning. It’s as old as the CRTC will allow on FM. To show you what I mean, here’s the Edison Media research’s Sample hour of CKCL, from theinfinitedial.com.

*Commadoors, “Lady, You bring Me Up”
*4 Tops, “Standing In The Shadows Of Love”
*Terry Jacks, “Seasons In The Sun”
*Baz Scaggs, “Leto Shuffle”
*Light House, “One Fine Morning”
*Billy Joel, “The Longest Time”
*Monkeys, “Last Train To Clarksville”
*Guess Who, “No Time”
*Beach Boys, “Good Vibrations”
*Ides Of March, “Vehicle”
*Doug And The Slugs, “Too Bad.

Looking at that playlist, you can tell that CKCL is not the average Rock leaning Classic Hits station. If CKKW were to go that route, then, yes, I believe that CTVglobemedia can claim that the Oldies format will survive the move to FM. Only time can tell how much change will be made to the station when the move to 99.5 is made later this year. Oh, and if you live in Kitchener/Waterloo, and you want to hear traditional Oldies, according to radiostationworld, you still have 2 choices: CKPC (1380 Brantford), and CJOY (1460 Guelf.)

Not to mention CKOC in Hamilton, which is a much better station than CJOY. I listened to CJOY once and it made me feel depressed. CKPC is a good station though. I never liked CKKW either as an oldies station, in fact K-W radio in general is terrible, except for 570 News and the Sunday oldies show on CHYM.

As far as classic hits goes, Kitchener-Waterloo does get CKDK from Woodstock, and there is some classic rock on CJXY from Burlington.

Sorry I didn’t post this update to the thread sooner, but ever since radio-info redesigned this website, I’ve been having issues with the site conflicting with my screen reader, so I haven’t had the motovation to post until now.

According to several reports, CKKW is now on the air, testing the new signal at 99.5. I can’t find a webstream for the test, so I don’t know what they’re running. Can anyone hear them? If so, what are they running? Anyway, the new format will be announced soon…

It is on the air and has been for about a week or two. the official launch was at 3pm today. I work in the hamilton-stoney creek area and have been listening to WDCX out of Buffalo for a few years now. Since they came on I don't get either one clearly(some of one - some of the other) at all while driving through Hamilton- Stoney Creek-Ancaster areas. Really frustrating.
As far as the play list goes - I heard some Surfin USA today and other stuff like that over the last few days. I think it is an oldies leaning rock. Stuff I know I don't want to hear.
How and Who do we contact to complain?

There's nothing you can do about it. It's completely legal, and as far as both the crtc and fcc are concerned, as long as a station doesn't interfere with another station in that stations country, and local city, they can be as close to each other as they want. So in other words, as long as CKKW doesn't interfere with WDCX on United States soil, it's ok, and as long as WDCX doesn't interfere with CKKW within CKKW's primary area of service (Kitchener/Waterlo0) everyone's happy. Maybe you should consider switching to CJYE 1250 Oakville. That's the local Christian station for the Toronto-Hamilton-Niagara area. CJYE is about to pick up a whole slew of new listeners.

Well, that might be true, or if WDCX streams, you could always listen online.

Here's CJYE's website, if you'd like to check that out:

I haven’t had regular access to this board for a while because of issues with my screen reader. Now that that problem is fixed, I’m playing maaaajor catchup with the radio-info Canada board. It looks like I’ve missed a lot in the past 2 months, and I’ve missed being around to post my thoughts on Canadian radio issues.

I read from another poster sometime back that CKKW relaunched as “K-Fun 99.5.” So, one of the first things I did when my computer issues were fixed was to go to their website, and, surprise, surprise, I found a stream. I was impressed by the way they promoted the station (“The Kingdom Of K-Fun?”) The music sounded fun and upbeat.

The oldies format seemed to stay intact. I noticed that there were a couple 80’s cuts thrown in, too. Some songs I heard during my afternoon of listening last week were:

*4 Tops, “Same Old Song”
*Rick Springfield, “Don’t Talk To Strangers”
*Temptations, “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg”
*Queen, “You’re My Best Friend”
*Billy Joel, “Uptown Girl”
*Spiral Staircase, “More Today Than Yesterday.”

As far as meeting CRTC regs, I guess now, from what I’ve heard, that’s a moot issue?

To the person who complained about interference to WDCX: There’s nothing you can do about that. However, 99.5 has been tried before as a station, and the occupant then (a country station, I think) gave up, and went to 104.7. Maybe, in 2 years, CTVglobemedia will get fed up with WDCX, and vacate the frequency. Hey, ya never know…

Yes.
Ignore my earlier posting in this thread.
It was made before CRTC made recent changes to the regs.
It is now legal to do Oldies on FM in Canada, as long as you are not in Ottawa or Quebec...I think it should just be Quebec, but that's my opinion.
